Raintree refusing to ship

Ok, I think what they meant by “upright from the base” is that they do bud grafting, which causes the young trees to have a quite noticeable crook at the graft union.

I agree that what you received definitely looks grafted.

I have ordered from Raintree in the past (several years ago) and the plants they sent were fantastic with better roots than from other online suppliers I had tried. My only complaint was that they ship them more than a month later than the ideal planting time for bare root trees in my area, and some of the trees in the box were already breaking dormancy. And their prices are pretty steep these days. I would still order from them again, and ask for earlier shipping if I could.

That definitely looks like a graft union, which seems absurd for a currant. However, it’s possible that the top of the bush broke and they cut the broken ends off and grafted it back into its own roots. That’s something I might see myself doing. :sweat_smile:
Unfortunately, I don’t know how you would find out for sure in this case.

Maybe they don’t graft but the suppliers they’ve gotten from most certainly do

A nursery would not re-graft a broken plant back to itself because it would be cheaper to just throw some fertilizer on it and let it regrow into a bushier and more impressive looking plant.

Nurseries don’t do one offs. A grafter does the same thing time after time as fast as possible for hundreds or thousands of plants a day.

Here’s some more pics, it’s definitely grafted, you can see a gap between the root stock and scion in the one pic.

100% You’re right. It’s a graft.

I still can’t tell. It could be an injury that’s healed.

@RaintreeJames

What you think.? Graft?

If that’s not a graft then I dunno what a tree is…:palm_tree:

Just to give an update summary after a few emails back and forth;

They work with a growing partner for these.

They are supposed to be on their own roots, not grafted.

They now agree mine is grafted and are looking into it with the growing partner and issued a refund.
