Reviving this thread for a bit more nuance:
It is generally recommended to tip prune floricane varieties once they get to chest or eye level height (sometimes even lower) to induce more lateral growth. But what about primocane varieties? What I’ve vaguely found online is that it too will induce more lateral growth (because why wouldn’t it?) at the expense of delaying the fall harvest. For those of us in mild climates without frost risk, in my case California, that shouldn’t be a concern and I wouldn’t even care if it pushed it all the way out to late fall. However, I’ve also read that tip pruning primocane varieties would severely affect yield because the fall harvest arrives on buds present on the tips. We all know that the tip does not represent 1/3rd of the overall cane length so that couldn’t be 100% true either. Anyone have experience in this department?
