Reliance Peach- Best Peaches ever!

I recall my Reliance peach was on small side of medium size, melting, juicy. Are you sure you have real Reliance?

Reliance are very dependable here in Kansas. Sounds like you will be eating good soon! They should be ripe soon.

My reliance are not even close to getting ripe.

I trust Fedco’s description of Reliance peach.

Reliance Peach - Fedco Trees.

If your peaches do not match this description, like @IL847 said, you probably got a mislabeled peach which has happened more often than we like.

In my area it is easy to tell what your growing because contender, reliance, and flat wonderful.are all i can grow here. Mine came from Gurneys and henry fields. I have grown a bunch of them. Very few places have had so much hot weather.

A mislabel could be possible. I have 10 that I planted from VanWell’s. Who has been pretty reliable. They bloom profusely and the younger tree’s peaches seem to match my old tree in coloration. They are ripening earlier but they have a lighter fruit load. The trees on the older tree aren’t too far behind though. We are a week or two ahead on ripening here this year. My Early Redhaven have already been harvested. Any one ever experience a grainy, almost mealy flesh in a peach?

Yes, in most store bought peaches… To me, those get it from being picked too early to ripen properly.

Generally my younger peach trees seem to ripen slightly later than my older peach trees (at least the first ones off the trees anyway).

You might cross check the leaf glands of your different aged Reliance trees. According to Reliance release notes, the glands should be globose.

I’ve had peach fruits with off tastes some years. I’ve also had some mealy some years. I know it’s counter intuitive, but if you are picking them close to ripe (i.e. ready to eat) instead try picking them a bit earlier Pick them when they are close, but still firm, then let them counter ripen to finish. Don’t refrigerate until they are counter ripened. I’ve found sometimes (not often) some varieties some years don’t do as well, if you wait for them to get soft on the trees. Generally, it’s when it’s been pretty hot.

Picking them super early and immediately storing them in the fridge can also cause mealiness, but I don’t think that’s your problem.

The Jap beetles here are almost exclusively on my apple trees. I have only found a couple on peach or cherry

All great information! I’ll try to compare leaf glands. The peaches we tasted were right off the tree with no refrigeration. They were close to ripe, so I’ll pick a few greener and let them counter ripen. A few peaches on the older tree are close, so I will compare those here soon too. We have had some hot weather the last week. Thanks to all!
