Removing fruit trees: what and why?

I had to look up the word hugelkultur. I’ve never heard it before.

I would be surprised if roots left in the ground would cause a soil imbalance like a hugelkultur. There’s just not enough C to affect the C/N ratio, imo. In fact there has been a lot of research using wood chips as mulch. Mostly the befits are very good and don’t cause problems, as long as the wood chips aren’t incorporated in the soil (but just left on top as a mulch).

A hugelkultur would be different, because, as I read the definition, it would be making a mound exclusively out of decaying material.

I made all my raised plantings for peach trees out of dirt. Once I tried making some mounds for young peach trees out of wood chips, because I was in a hurry, and I wanted to see what would happen.

The peach trees actually seemed to do OK for a while, then when it got hot. The sun heated up the wood chips and they started composting. They got really hot and ended up cooking the roots and killing the young peach trees.

Most of the replant issues are due to disease, or nematodes.
