Every time I have tried it in TN it gets root rot mid summer.
You may want to check out the variety Kanga-rhu from Gurney’s (sigh). It’s supposed to be pretty heat tolerant from what they say.
I came here because I have flowers starting on one of the plants I planted from my father in law a couple years ago. @zendog gave me the answer I was looking for.
Last plant I had that did that went to seed and died afterwards. At the time I thought I would let it seed and propagate it but it did not work out like I planned.
Rhubarb grows in New Orleans in raised beds ?
try that maybe add in some sand gravel
(but the soil I saw always looks heavy even there)
Not sure why you may have problems In TN?
I been there, and they have wet rain
how much wet rain a year you get?
I should ask my travel friend he is from there ,
and his family has a lot of planting knowledge in TN.
His Dad was born 1889, is black, and his Mom is Cherokee
His large family has a history of good at growing things.

@clarkinks
I have not seen seeded plants die
this may be due to how old they are
(as the ones I see are old)
If you get very fiber ones with bitter skin , and thin stalks
those are good for wine.
This could be your climate scorching hot as well though.
