Sad pear tree

Had an exchange of emails about Warren today with Trees of Antiquity.

Their website has it listed good through zones 9 and 10.

I see 600 hours as a chill requirement most places I look.

I asked TofA about it and they said they consider zone 10 as 500 chill hours.

That’s so far out of whack from everything I’ve read elsewhere including my own state Ag department.

It’s not so out of whack, I think they can be accurate. I have a nectarine with 650 hours(Heavenly White) and they have loads of fruit, I’m in zone 10, less than 7 miles from the beach, I have marine layer in the morning, our roof is wet with moisture in the morning
I like their system better than Raintree. But like most things, it’s trial and error.

Indeed the whole chill thing is empirical at best.

Hell if I use the modified Utah method that takes away units above a certain temp, I can actually get negative hours for a total winter like last.

I’ve looked at a lot of online nursery and university websites…while there are differences in the quoted chill requirement for many fruit varieties, this is the first time I’ve seen the actual growing zone chill hour estimate that is different.

I also ordered Jung’s Hardy Wisconsin and Karl’s Favorite this year from Jung Seed. My Hardy Wisconsin looked very similar to yours galinas and is also doing very well. It was the first of the pears that I put in this year to send out shoots.

I noticed the same thing that you did with the Karl’s Favorite tree. Mine hasn’t died and it just recently put out some new leaves but it is noticeably way slower growing. Just leaves and no shoots (yet).

I dug my dead one out. On the stem in two places there is a dark indentation that looks like fire blight. The root was black too but that could be because it is already dead?

I experienced that with the Flemish Beauty that I got from Mehrabyan. Half the trunk was black. So I took that one out and burned it.

Hopefully Jung’s Hardy Wisconsin tastes good because it seems to be doing well for the both of us!
