I personally like to stay away from compost in potting mixes. Itās pretty good for starting veggies, but for long-term potting it causes more trouble than itās worth. Too much water retention, loss of soil volume as it decomposes, etc. Compost in the garden is another story entirely. Canāt get enough of it there!
It all depends on how you manage it. All organic potting mix, peat, coir, pine bark and compost will decay and shrink. The only thing that does not shrink is the sand or regular soil. You are supposed to re-pot fig trees every two years to give them root pruning.
I do see issue if you have some large trees in 20-gallon pots. I think that is what you said ālong-term pottingā. I do not have anything as large as that.
