Has it been confirmed that Zard & Canadian White Blenheim are the same?
Scott says he feels strongly about it based on his personal observations, but I am not aware of any wider study or genetic testing on the matter.
Either they are the same or they are very similar, so few apricots flower that late that it is very suspicious. Unfortunately I removed the CWB some years ago so I stopped being able to compare them. “CWB” was the result of a scionwood mix-up so it really could be anything.
Hi Scott. Stan mentioned in another thread that Lola Nectarine reportedly ripens about Redhaven +50. Do you recall if that is about the timeframe you experienced in your location?
It wasn’t that late for me… looking at my logs it was right after Ernies Choice, I don’t know where that one is listed but vaguely I’d guess +30 not +50.
Hi! Do you think pluots like flavour candy or flavour supreme are a must to have? Thank’s!
And another question, pluots or plumcots? Thank’s!
If it pollinated well I would have kept my Flavor Supreme. If Flavor King did not rot so badly I would have kept it as well (I am going to try it again now that I am spraying synthetics). Dapple Dandy is fine but not as good as these two. Flavor Grenade was too much like kids candy to me. All of the pluots are somewhat similar in taste to me, so there is no need to get many of them.
I had a few plumcots and have pulled them all out, none were must-haves. Spring Satin was probably the best but it was hard to ripen properly.
Thank you very much for your reply! It is still difficult to get several varieties of pluots or plumcots here in Europe, so i will try to get flavour candy and flavour supreme… Thank’s!
Another one that we don’t have here is spicezee nectarine…
Not sure what kind of peach I have… I thought it was red haven, fuzzless, but it’s a clingstone peach ripens so much earlier than a red
haven is supposed to ripen (i think) it’s already ripe June 18 in zone 6aYellow flesh
possibilities?
Thanks
Rich May ripens around the same time here in zone 7A. Sagittaria even earlier but that one is not available in US. Springcrest around 6/28
I have a graft of Flavor King on my Santa Rosa and its leaves got all bug-eaten. It does have one fruit which probably won’t last. Might be hard to see in this picture. At least my plums don’t have any pc bites. I wonder if extream cold might have killed the pc populations. I did follow Alans spray schedule though plus added an extra one.
The graft is in the blue sky above the house. If you click on it you can see the bug bites which are not on the rest of the tree.
Did you remove the tart cherries because they were not productive?
No, I just realized I like Montmorency more than the other ones and they were next to it. The initial planting had trees 2-3’ apart but now Monty has about 12’ all to itself.
Still my fav too!
My Spring Satin has only begun to bear fruit and I don’t see how it could be hard to ripen. Not sure what Scott means because the few fruit mine had were only hard in determining when they are ripe, and that’s a problem that would seem to sort itself out once the tree comes to full productivity. The couple of fruit I tasted were a very good early plum that had tang and could be eaten crisp. The problem is that they color up long before they are ripe and the appearance and firmness stays the same as they gradually sweeten up- so they are easy to pick too soon. Early bearing varieties can be the hardest to wait for because after a winter of deprivation patience tends to be in short supply and there aren’t other trees with ripe fruit to distract you.
Where you are, you don’t have to worry about the fruit rotting as much as Scott does- one has no idea about how much rain and high humidity adds to disease and insect pressure unless you’ve lived in a climate like Scott’s. I started growing fruit in S. CA and moved to the NY so I’ve grown fruit in both conditions, and it is night and day when it comes to pest pressure.
Pluots are a great addition to the roster of J. plum fruits. Interestingly, Elephant Heart also has the capacity to develop high sugar while still crisp and I assume that it plays a part in the genetics of red-fleshed pluots.
One problem I’ve had with Flavor Grenade, the only pluot I’ve gotten real crops from because it was the first variety I planted, is that wasps like them and attack them before I want to harvest them.
@scottfsmith nice post here…Do you have an update? I’m particularly interested in santa rosa, satsuma, and flavor supreme…where do they stand now?
Not much changed on the above… Santa Rosa I took out maybe 5 years ago since in 15 years it never set much. I topworked it with Weeping Santa Rosa which is the same flavor but sets well. Flavor Supreme I also took out a long time ago for lack of set. Dapple Dandy is similar in flavor but sets well. Satsuma is still my overall favorite plum.
What climate are you in? The setting on these plums varies greatly by climate.
I should update the above since it is now 5 years out of date …
Scott,
I look forward to reading your update.
I took out my Satsuma because its flower buds got killed by late freeze and frost too many years. I am happy with Elephant Heart as a more than adequate replacement.
I am trying to save Laroda and Lavina and hope the grafts will take.
Do you still have Shaa kar pareh? Mine blooms heavy every spring and never sets anything. I think i have ate 2 fruit off of it in what must be closing in on 10 years. I want to woodchip it but it really is a perfect little tree///all my other apricots just die for no apparent reason.
Satsuma is in full bloom right now. Very hardy plum/very consistent even in this artic climate i have.
