Shenandoah pear

The Shenandoah pears I bought had very little juice in them. I off course have only gotten them from that one source, that one time. I have not seen them where I live, I found them on a trip when I was visiting my family.

I have quite a few different pears and this is the main (or only) variety to get hit this way. I had read that walnuts could be a trap species to keep worms away from the orchard, but I have no idea if that’s true.

99% of web sites state not self fertile, but this year I had one bagged cluster set a couple fruit. (I’m experimenting with custom crosses and use fine mesh organza bags which are quite reliable to keep out unwanted pollen).

Maybe parthenocarpic. Check for seeds when you harvest

These are intended for very long storage purposes. This pear takes a long time in storage to mellow. Many compare it to battery acid when first picked. Later it becomes a good pear once it mellows.

I’m not very different from you on your tastes. Large seckel is incredible. You need to try that one. Regular seckel is delicious also. Magness and Warren taste identical and much like comice since they are related so that makes sense. They are great pears

Hi Clark,

Your praise of large Seckel had tempted me to ask you for bud wood. Here we go😊, hope you can spare a couple of sticks in the spring.

I have a couple grafted scions on the shady side of a mature tree. They didn’t grow much this year. I got them specifically because I wanted storage pears.

Update: The self fertile pears fell off the tree while quite small. I’ll test a larger sample size next year.
