Skillcult varieties: Share your firsthand experiences

The depth of field you were able to capture suggests that you spent some time and effort getting your camera to focus on the main subject in order to give that beautiful out-of-focus background. It doesn’t look like you just shot from the hip and that was the first image you captured. I’m claiming that you have the skill and are gracing us with the results.

I hate to tell you this, but modern cell phones add that effect with software. You can tell when the blur was added this way because you will see spots where the boundary between blurred and non-blurred areas is sharp and not a function of distance from camera the way that “true” depth-of-field is.

Sorry :stuck_out_tongue:

Not saying that isn’t a beautiful photo, it definitely is.

Chestnut x Rub/PinkPar 25-1 has a promising blush. Hopefully it shows off more going forward so if the fruit sucks its onimental value may carry it forward.

Just pretty, thought I’d share before the leaves are all on the ground.

Your seedlings are gorgeous. Hope that bodes well for fun fruit in a few years. I’m patently waiting for some new seeds crosses to go on sale.

Same. I would like to do the crosses myself but one of the parents that I want to lean into isn’t old enough to even offer pollen yet so I appreciate the crosses on offer.

Yes, it’s a slow game! I did make some crosses with Skillcult’s pollen (on my own white-fleshed apple trees) this year, but based on some things I’ve read about certain pollen parents potentially not passing along the red-flesh trait (something about an S3 incompatibility allele?), I’m wondering if I’ll end up with any pink fleshed apples from these. Who knows. I’ll be planting those crosses this spring, so won’t know for at least a few years anyway.

I’m leaning more towards disease resistance so Chestnut will be my favored seed parent. I’d like to do Black Oxford and King David crosses but my BO is young and I don’t have KD in my roster yet so that is even further from fruition. Once I start doing my own crosses I’ll probably get the kids involved and let them pick parents for the fun of it. Maybe by their teen years they will see returns.

Is anyone familiar with “Saorit” or “Jujube” apple varieties? I’m not having any luck finding anything about them.

I had some Jujube apple pollen from Skillcult this year that I snagged in one of his giveaways. His notes suggested that it was a Wickson cross. Looks like he’s written about it here:

I say you buy those crosses and then tell us all about them!
(No idea about Saorit… I tried looking that one up with no success)

I just read above that Chestnut is your favorite seed parent, so… the jujube is perfect! Maybe you need a full garden bed full of those!

O I’m ready to sprout out more than I will ever have room for. Chestnut will be in the mix for sure.

Well, the Skillcult seeds were released! What did everyone buy? Or are most excited about germinating?

I was hunting Musketeer crosses, Twang crosses with larger apples & took a chance on the Saorit & Pink Parfait. Always fun to have a mystery.

Missed out on any Sugarwood, Pinker Lady & Pomegranate crosses but still excited.

Bought a few vanilla pink x gold rush, trailman x hella kitty, sam young x golden russet, october blend OP.

Have ~30 varieties, but this is my first foray into starting from seed. Any advice from the experts on here for stratification, planting, and juvenile care?

Im not an expert, It’s important to soak the seeds first. Then I push the seeds into damp peat moss or coconut coir & cover w/ more soil. The container needs to be of good size w/ a lid, I burn drainage holes using a soldering iron. I recycle 5" round clear plastic containers thats about 2"

deep. If the container is small, the soil can dry out faster.

I note cultivar & how many seeds planted. Skillcult recommends cooling for at least 6 weeks. I start checking on them & plucking out any germinated seeds to plant. Return the containers back to cooling & perhaps a spritz of water, if needed. Not too much or they will go moldy.

Happy growing!

I looked maybe 3 hours after he had listed the seeds and all of the pomegranate crab crosses had been sold.

Awesome thats great info. Sounds similar to the paw paws i have done before. I have heard of people doing peroxide bath first and then theres folks that just plant them outside.

Do you do fridge or leave them in a safe spot outside?

I have a dedicated fridge for germination, seeds packets, rootstocks, scions etc.

I keep germinated seedlings in protected/inside area under timed lighting for many months as they mature. The critters will eat tender plants outside.

Have you fruited musky yet or are you going off of the description?

I wish i had a dedicated fridge. I tape my seeds & scions to the inside of my fridge since theres a lack of horizontal space most of the time. Disorganized and full of leftovers is the most common state.
