Some of these fig people are crazy!

Which fig variety were you describing in category number four? It sounds delicious!

My fig trees haven’t fruited for me yet, but I collect the leaves from them every year before they drop them in fall. Dried and powdered, they make a delicious, floral flavoring. I love to make fig leaf cake with the powder I make from the leaves.

It’s one of those varieties that takes a while to establish, although it does catch up to the faster establishing ones. I am saying this because my tree is too small to get cuttings from, it’s not that I don’t want to share. I made sure that two people got the variety before me even though I was the one who initiated the rescue propagation of the tree. The original tree is most likely gone by now. I have personally had figs off of the original tree, and so I know by personal experience what perfectly ripe figs of the variety are like.

If the tree was bigger I’d be offering cuttings of it. Speaking of cuttings, I did not send out cuttings of fig varieties to people like I had promised last Autumn. Something came up, and I will be sending out to those people in spring, a message for any one of you who sees this.

It’s this variety Lily's Berry Delight (Unknown) ('Elegant Berry, Exotic Berry', 'Complex Berry' fig flavor) - Bountiful Figs

Deer also eat my figs. However, my deer are crazy. I can reliably say they don’t eat daffodils or pawpaw (but will eat other things that are supposedly deer proof). They do destroy the pawpaw by rubbing against them though… .

It’s a shame when a delicious and unusual-tasting fruit is hard to propagate. I’m so glad you rescued it! Why is the original tree most likely gone now?

I estimate that it’s been 8 to 9 years since I heard anything about the original tree, back then it was already obvious that the land would be developed, it’s one of those things that the developers will win eventually. The rest of the family would rather just sell to developers. The owner would have turned 101 years old last December.

Once its bigger id love to help. Im happy to try to some single node cuttings if you have any extras when you send it out. ive also been meaning to try tissue culture of figs so maybe this could be my first project if you want to work together on it

Ah. Yeah, I imagine you’re right to assume that.

All of this fig talk got me into wanting more figs, I already have 20+ in pots and 3 in the ground. I broke down and ended up purchasing cuttings of Florea and Green michurinska. I plan on rooting and planting in ground with heavy winter protection.

Ugh I want gm..one of these days I’ll pick it up

@snarfing If you remind me in the fall I can send you a cutting. In my zone I have to trim figs back a lot and mulch heavy to get in ground figs to make it through the winter so I usually have cuttings to root in the fall.

In hottest summer my Malta Black tastes unmistakably of peach. Once I discovered the strawberry jam taste of Adriatic JH I’ve added a bunch more Adriatic figs (strawberry) with different names. I feed friends/neighbors a Mt Etna fig, they say that’s nice. I feed them an Adriatic and their eyes open wide and they get a huge smile.

Yes, Adriatic type figs are amazing, that one is my favorite kind so far, as long as they are properly ripe. Although Lily’s Berry Delight is like a Adriatic type only better, that added raspberry taste when perfectly ripe, and even though it taste nothing like banana, it sure smells like it, such a nice smell for a fig I think.

I think that you should propitiate the variety by cuttings, and then if you are still interested, you can do tissue culturing from your own tree. It’s very hard to successfully do a tissue culturing, you’d have to make double sure that no bacteria or fungus get in to the culture, or the culture would totally be ruined.

I generally dont love Adriatic, mostly because I dont love strawberries. But im in the hunt for the early ripening one of my wifes dreams lol
