I find 2nd and 3rd crops on everbearing or day neutrals to be light. Still I do like to have some. if you want berries for processing the Junes are cool as mentioned harvest time is short. And as I mentioned you can expand harvest window by growing a few types. When it’s mid-summer my raspberries and blackberries start producing and keep producing (as I have early, mid, late cultivars) till first frost. So berries keep coming.
I see I made an error above. I meant to say that I think I recall reading that the risk of picking up poisons are greatest in ROOT crops, less in leaf crops, and even less in fruit crops. But again, I could be wrong.
I just ventured into the gutter strawberry growing today. The nursery had soil called “strawberry fields” so I figured that would be good for strawberries. I am concerned with the depth of the gutter though. The cups where the strawberries came was deeper than the gutter and i had to remove a lot of the soil and spread the roots along. Hopefully they make it. I only did 4 for about a 9 foot gutter. It was super easy to do though.
@Snomelc I’m curious about your experience so far in growing strawbs in rain gutters. Did they establish and fruit well for you this year?
