Birds ate 2 of the 3 Flavor Kings that set for me this year. The 3rd has cracked badly, I’m not sure it will ripen properly. We will see…
My Flavor King fruit usually has more reddish flesh than that.
I liked them as a child. We too called them Chinese apples. They always came into the grocery between xmas and new years. But for me they stain and are really messy, so a no go for me.
Some Hosui pears. They are so good. We picked about a third of them with the plan to pick the rest this weekend. I cut one up and dehydrated it with some figs. Better than any candy.
It’s gets more red if left to ripen in the tree, but the squirrels never let it last that long
My Hosui have been delicious this year too. I’ve been picking a few every day for a couple weeks now as they turn a golden brown. Everyone I’ve given some to loves them. I’ll probably not have enough of this one to dehydrate since they’re so amazing fresh. I’ve had dried Asian pears before from the store, and they are great so I’ll probably make some out of my other non-preferred varieties. Did you peel the skin before dehydrating? @growjimgrow
No, I just sliced them up and left the skin on. Funny story, my family was eating them last night when one of the slices had rolled itself up, skin side out. They thought it looked like a slug, which to be fair, it did resemble a slug. Damage done. They won’t eat them dehydrated anymore. More for me.
It looks to me that the flesh to pit ratio is too small, suggestive of underdeveloped fruit of subpar quality. So, a 7/10 is what I would expect.
Pretty though!
Indian Free peaches are too strange for me! These fell off over the last few days’ wind and rain, so I left them out to ripen some more. They are a startling red inside. The taste is what is really odd. Hard to describe. Not exactly just tart - but a dry ‘puckery’ sensation. I hope that the ones that are still on the tree will develop more sugar - or something!
Anyone else have something to say about Indian Frees?
They are not like any other peach I’ve ever eaten.
I think I’ll be grafting over quite a bit of it this coming year!
That is usually the taste of ‘Black Boy’ which were dark red fleshed peaches grown for pickeling. Mam has them as does Drew51 and others! They have Indian.
Picked some Maxine pears. Wow. very crisp and juicy, comparable to the juicy Asian pears. I may have picked them a little too soon, not as sweet as European pears. Overall, more of Asian pear too me
I cut up the core. The seeds are still all white. So I did picked them too early
I have had excellent Indian free in the past. High sugar and high acid, but if the sugar doesn’t match that strong acid kick they can be quite inedible.
I grew Indian Free peach for two years. Too tart for me. I know a lot of people really like this peach and have waxed poetic about it. I am not convinced.
Black Boy was almost bitter, to me. I thought it was for fresh eating. Both were gone from my yard.
Mine would flower but not fruit. Plus, it got the most curl of my resistant varieties.
So I grafted it to Early Laxton Plum, which has grown vigorously.
Tippy, India free doesn’t perform well here either. It ripens too late . There isn’t enough high temperatures days left for it to make sugar for the fruits.
Agree. Late ripening here in 6a. We don’t have heat/strong sun to get sugar up. My Autunm Star peaches are very late, too, but they taste a lot better and sweeter.
Good luck! They look amazing!
