Tajikistan Apricots

Article sure makes me want to try some! I see that Andy’s Orchard sells Anya and Yuliya. Assume they grow both rather than resell from Candycots?

Do they also sell scions?

I don’t know. Would be nice if they did.

I planted it from Arboretum in 2016 and it is still doing OK. I think I had one or two fruit set this past year, but something got them before they were ripe.

I worry about cots with edible seeds being particularly attractive to squirrels and chipmunks. If they store them, even a couple of chipmunks might harvest a crop from a mature tree.

I agree, last year squirrels were stealing green apricots from my tree and I found a few chewed pits below the tree with the kernels gone…

When acorns are scarce, surviving squirrels are most hungry in spring. They will happily eat green nuts.

Does anyone sell scions or plants for these apricots? Would Andy’s Orchard sells Anya and Yuliya scions?

I just emailed Andy’s Orchard if they do. They bring scions to the CRFG exchanges, the first one is in San Jose this Saturday 1/12/2019. I’ll be there.

Please keep us posted…

I just received the following response:

Sorry, those two varieties are highly restricted with propagation rights owned by the CandyCot Co. No propagation or even breeding with these two varieties is allowed by my contract with CandyCot.

I think that contract was written when the Candycot Co was still growing them commercially, which is no longer the case. If you read under the Facebook post where they announce discontinued production of Candycots, you will see a response to one of the page followers comments saying that they tried to make them available for home growers via a nursery but they couldn’t get the nursery’s interest. Based on that, if someone here has a connection to one of the nurseries that sell to home growers, he/she may hook them together and the candycots may be available for us in a few years. It seems that Anya, Yulia and other previously grown candycots proved challenging for commercial production and hence the breeder is willing to offer them for home growers, but he does not have the capacity to do that himself.

White apricots really don’t take any longer to become productive when grafted as compared with their orange-fleshed counterparts.
We never tried any white-fleshed selections on ‘Citation,’ but we did have a nice replicated study comparing 9 apricot cultivars & selections on both ‘Nemaguard’ and ‘Citation.’ The real purpose was to examine any precocity, fruit size increase or enhanced skin color on behalf of the patented rootstock. Results were pretty insignificant.
