it’s literally just dirt, I splashed last time I was watering in there. these and the figs were in the way!
I wonder, I’ve got a West facing spot with a basement window where I could plant, and wrap the tree up against the house, the heat from the window may help.
I’d say those flower buds even like they might be starting to open already! Thank you for sharing the photos. Looks like you got enough to start your own kindergarten soon.
Where is this tree growing?
I bet Haas from Traded Joe’s, since that person shops there quite often. Well I guess I have 3 Haas seedlings to join the party. I feel like they’ll do excellent in the greenhouses here since the coldest reading I get is 37. My main source of heat are huge rain barrels, though I also have a biogreen 2800 watt, 220V heater that kicks on if temps flirt with freezing. That only happens when we drop below 25, which is fairly rare, maybe 5 nights each winter. So far there is no need for any artificial light despite the interminable cloudy conditions from November until March. All the avocados seem quite happy.
What kinds do you have growing?
They had said earlier in this thread that it was in northern Italy, but no further detail than that.
Oh, so likely in that northern lakes region, near Switzerland. I’ve been talking to a dude who lives there about the avocados and citrus he grows. His citrus trees are quite impressively large and require minimal protection. My uncle lived in that region for a short time when I was a little boy. He termed it a Banana Belt, and told me about many plants growing there which also grew near our home in Southern California.
By the way, I meant to ask, have you guys been getting these mid 20’s the last couple of nights? We hit 25 the night before last and 24 last night. If so, how is the tall Mexicola seedling faring so far?
my oldest is a joey with a duke graft provided by @swincher some time ago, two mexicola (?) he gave me, and then a young tree about six months old, that I started from a massive fruit my sister sent me from tropical area down on the Caribbean region (US territory) the seed on that one was near the size of market fruit! it’s now two feet tall with some branching after I pinched the apical growth. that fruit was near the size of my head I swear, I planted the seed on a whim and it took off.
mine are all in the greenhouse above 40F for winter and have not stopped new growth yet. they will likely slow down soon as the greenhouse gets closer to 40F even in daytime; we get bitter cold here from Jan-early March and so that’s when mine tend to get dormant and lose some leaves…
the oldest one tried to make a flower this summer, I have some hopes for it especially since one of the grafts took well.
Do they go dormant? I’m in zone 8a Cape Charles Virginia and growing fig trees that I bring into the garage during winter. Is this possible? I’ve got a window on the south side of the house but I never tried using it to grow something.
Sharing my avocado seedlings. I have 5 avocado seedlings in an unheated green house. Night time low in the 37 - 38 degree. There is a fragrant pear seedling that just sprouted 3 days ago. 2 Cherimoya not even sprouted yet, but I could see a stem trying to poke out.
My small green house. All plants and no room for me to be inside.
My random avocado seedlings. All from the super market.
Close up of the 2 smallest avocado seedlings.
Nothing like that yet! The coldest yet has been a few nights around 30°F:
You would want to leave it outside in the sun other than during hard freezes, I think. They go dormant in the sense that they stop putting on new top growth, but they are of course evergreen and actually their roots still grow some in winter, so you can’t store them in darkness like dormant figs. I keep my potted trees outside most of the winter, just bring them inside if I expect it to be below about 28°F, or sometimes as low as 25°F.
It’s been crazy cold here. Last night hit 24 again. I use C9 Christmas lights that add 17 degrees under the frost cover.
How has that impressive Mexicola seedling handled the season so far? Still looking as good as earlier this month? I realize the lows haven’t been sufficient to cause any major issues, I don’t think. I’m also curious how the Mexicola handles the persistent overcast and chilly high temps while unprotected.
It’s a Mexicola Grande seedling, but I’ll have to give you an answer tomorrow. It was fine a week ago, the last time I was there.
It has been sunny in Seattle! But frost does sometimes seem to make avocados more prone to sunburn.
It’s been sunny here too. Which is partially why it’s so cold. Without the cloud cover it’s gorgeous and mid 50’s during the daytime, but once the sun goes down the chill sets in fast. We are 35 miles from the ocean, making the marine influence far less than in Seattle. Hence the warmer summers too. Typically the average Willamette Valley high in November is mid 50’s with a low of 40. Though the record low for November is 9 degrees, so it could be a lot worse.
