The next big project 2023 - 2024 - 2025

One of my several current projects is my front yard where the most sunny spots are. From mostly lawn I am trying to make it small orchard that still looks good enough for the front of the house. Before, 2021:

We have 60 acres of mostly forest but about half of that used to be cotton fields when my husband was a child. So, we plan to rent a dozer and clear 15 acres of it on the best most fertile ground and prepare it for fruit production. We’d like to have a combination of farmers market sales and you pick operation. We’ve been growing apples, peaches, blackberries, and blueberries here in the yard and it’s going well so we feel ready for prime time. We have got jujube trees ordered already, and muscadine grapes order to plant in the yard if we don’t have to land ready to go by the time they arrive this fall. Once the land is ready, we’ll be planting more blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and vegetables. I may do dwarf apple trees in a section since they mature faster and are easier to reach. I’ve got so many dreams that I’m not sure I’ll live long enough to see them all come to fruition, I’m 65. We’d love to be working on it now but the heat index has been over 110 most of the summer and we just can’t be out in that a long time. But, fall will be here soon and we’ll be out in it giving it our best!

I think it will cool off some very soon. Sounds like a great project!

I am adding 4x90’ raised beds: 3 will be for more raspberries and one of the rows will be blueberries (new for us). Oh and adding 75 euro pears on OHxF97

I’m hopefully going to bulk buy 100-200 rootstocks, pot them up, and graft a few varieties of apples and/or pears and grow them out for 1-2 years and sell them locally. Should be fun and a way to pay for my hobby and learn things more quickly.

You’re making me jealous. Is there another 40 or 80 I could buy?

Get your wallet out. Even Kansas land is not cheap.

My next big project started about two weeks ago, removal and working up two 30 year old cedars from my front yard. I was concerned they could damage my water and sewer lines plus the roots were taking nutrients from all other plants around them. So now that they are gone and I made firewood and a huge chip pile, I have a lot of new area and mulch material to add more useful fruit production.
