The really fireblight resistant pears are a short list

I got severe blight on about 10 trees, “resistant” varieties and not “resistant”. I’m not seeing where the resistant claims come from. I’ve had to cut out major chunks of all of them and I still don’t have it all under control yet. Looks to me like FB resistance is more of a marketing term.

Fireblight is an every changing organism. My Warren had zero issues with fireblight for 6 years. Now, 7th year, it has some not very serious strikes. Last year, Ayers lost 2/3 of the top of the tree. This year, Ayers has grown nearly 8 feet already and will grow more before fall. Instead of thinking of it as a “marketing term”, maybe view it as a moving target where yesterday’s highly resistant variety gets overwhelmed by this year’s new strain of fireblight.
