not sure how to send you a private message with my info for those plants
the arizona sun is super strong. i have them on my back porch with a grow light about 2 feet away from them. they receive some sun light but mainly the grow light
I have a buddy who grew tobacco most of his life in southern Indiana. What I remember they would broadcast seed with wood ash so they could see the seed, onto a fine seed bed. They covered them for a while in a fine white cloth until they germianted and got on thier way. I’m not sure if the cloth was for light shade of for climate modification. They would remove it once they got going. We would pull the plants, when they were 6-9" tall and “set” them into the field from a planter. They would wilt like crazy and then bounce back.
Maybe the sun is too intense on the juvenile plants.
I took some home one time and planted them on the north side of my parents house in full shade. They got to be 5’-6’ tall and flowered.
Awesome. We are very simular in growing it out. What varieties are you growing. Yellow Twist, Greenwood and Warner are my main types. I also set out Big Gem and Catterton as centerpieces just for show with flowering types.
another thing might be the soil i am using? it looks like small mulch. you can see it in the pics i added
put them in a place they get only morning sun until noon ish. if theyre ok with that then give them full sun but try to keep them moist but not soaking. too wet will rot the roots. a little mulch around them should limit watering needs to once a day. most plant growing lights dont give enough sun for tobacco.
i saw that . id pot them up into a good soil mix like happy frog or fox farms ocean forest.
Did you start them indoors or are those your sprouts right now? i remember tobacco growing slow as seedlings for sure. That potting soil looks fairly wet, if they die after they get that size be mindful of drowning them. Next year starting before last frost indoors might help you
those are my sprouts as of now. everything has been inside under a grow led lamp
Golden wilt, Burley PA, Virginia 335 (?), mass wrapper, simox, and the landrace seeds
update on the year’s crop so far. there will only be one more update for these plants as next month I’ll be pulling and hooking what’s left to hang and cure
the plants got to 9 feet or more. I’ve got armloads color cutting in towel cure right now and more hanging, getting sprayed with casing each day since it’s so dry here
plants in the thick patch
a grip i collected as i was harvesting stuff
some hanging to color cure, i spray daily with casing
for casing i use spiced rum, honey, a drop of glycerin, and water. here’s the color cured starting to dry:
and a few dry bundles ready to get boxed and age.
last year’s crop is now getting smoked, aged since last fall, cased then shredded, in quart jars. i got 3 jars from that test patch and will have much more this year.
seed collection- i pull the brown heads and dry, then jar those up for next year. i think next year I’ll do a few of each variety I’ve got seed for, plus a lot of this landrace/crossed stuff I’m saving, and see how it is
the ones i saved from last year made good sticky big dark leaves, i think the burley pollinated a lot of it
@asulwer if you want seed let me know. also how did your crop go? did they make it
My first guess is that soil. Try using a good quality sterile seed starting mix.
The other things I’d be concerned about would be incorrect moisture and humidity and not enough light.
I have been unsuccessful in the past when trying to germinate the seeds. Although, maybe a few came up and I thought they were something I did not want and removed.
I literally sprinkle seeds in good dirt in a 10 gallon aquarium with well moistened soil. Cover in plastic wrap with a few holes poked into it. Place under a bush in a sunny location. In no time at all you have tiny plants you can soon pot up.
I have just the thing… mwahahaha…
i grew burley and virginia bright. they got to 6ft. here. drying currently.
Do any of you guys ferment your tobacco? Any easy methods?
once mine are dry enough, im going to try fermenting and casing for flavor.
I’m looking forward to eventually joining y’all’s ranks as a grower, and then returning to the enjoyment. I miss the flavor but I’ve been taking a long break from the experience.
I’m very guarded about fermentation. It really depends on what you want and the tobacco you are using. If I am making a sweet mild plug base; fermentation is potentially counter productive if you have Connecticut Broad Leaf and Golden Burley for example.
Now if you have a harsh tobacco like a Turkish or similar; Fermentation makes sense.
