Yeah the one on the right is a red hybrid from Adam at flying Fox fruits.I have a “seed/ling” yellow but not sure it’s going to survive. And the larger one is a normal cauliflora
Anyone grown kadsura before or have tasted it? I have 1 seed that germinated (its possible some more have germinated since I’ve been gone) and just seeing if anyone has experience with them. I hear they aren’t really a tropical, so I feel like theres a good chance someone has a vine or 2.
I have almost bought them myself seeds and/or plants but I am trying hardy kiwis again. If I can get rid of jasmine I’d contemplate putting a Kadsura there. I think @swincher was talking about growing some and I am sure @Luisport has grown Kadsura he’s got everything haha
No kadsura for me, though I have thought it seems interesting. I might grow it if anyone convinces me that it actually is delicious and not just interesting looking, but so far I haven’t seen anything to convince me of that.
Yes for now im just growing kadsura heterochila, the yellow fruit variety.
Have you been able to taste it before?
No, not yet.
Not sure if this is a quirky bud or just dead, but the dragonfruit has a yellow flower bud on it. The rest on it (and its clones) are all green until the fruit starts to ripen. The tips of some of the petals are still green, but the very tip is brown, so I’m thinking it just died. Thought it was interesting though.
It was a dead bud, fell off shortly after. But the rest of the flower buds are producing fruit. Not sure what variety, but it is probably both self fertile and self pollinating as the flower almost always produce a fruit.
I managed to snag some fruit of a strawberry guava tree that was planted in front of walmart. Combined with the hundredish tamarind and cocoplum seeds I got, I got alot of seeds to plant when I get home. Pretty good haul from fresh fruits while down in South Florida. Also picked up 4 mango seedlings and a bunch of curry leaf tree seedlings out of the yard.
We didn’t get that much wind so I didn’t bother protecting anything but just noticed we lost the mango and the left side new limb. Oh well I’ll counter it and see if it ripens. Wanted to try this ice cream variety
Apperently, I have 7 cranberry hibisicus, not 2. I was thinking about my Florida Cranberries in the front yard. Speaking of though…
Absolutely massive stalk on this one! Its at least an inch in diameter, which is like 3x as thick as my others.
Finally made it back home for now. Have a huge hornworm problem, so its time to reset my tomatoes and groundcherries. We’ve had tons of rain, so lots of pruning, weeding and repositioning to get done too. Gonna be busy.
My cranberry hibiscus went from tiny starts to trees in a month, wild how large the trunk became
Also you can just break off any branch stick it in the ground and voila it grows in a week. I now have probably 20 haha
Thats good to know. I wonder if the Roselle will root like that too? It needs a trim so I am going to try anyways. Gonna be trying to root some Genovese Basil as well, its on its way to becoming a full sized bush.
How well does passiflora root from cuttings? My 'purple possum" is huge right now, but theres a good chance it will defoliate in winter. I’d like to get some cuttings from it to overwinter in the greenhouse to get a head start.
I think all passiflora root easily from cuttings but I’ve never tried. Mine send runners and I pull them and tbh it’s the same as rooting a cutting and they have never failed. I almost never get any roots with them, however they just may be more easily rooted since they are already underground and have likely the rooting hormone built in.
Just staked up my guava tree it was weak from always being in a pot up until a month ago. The many dozens of fruit make wind not pleasant for it, I don’t want it to snap at the base
Edit * also had my Chilean guava berries because they all were falling off, of the dozen I tried only one tasted close to what I would call good. But it could be underripe and falling for unrelated means. However my eagerness for the plants have waned substantially due to the flavor. Very minty and not a great texture along with being teeny tiny. Maybe in the years to come they will improve, or Queen Victoria had poor taste in fruits haha
May have killed one of my phalsas. That root sitting next to it was buried in the ground when I picked up the pot. Didn’t realize it was growing like that out the bottom. Its starting to wilt. Luckily I have a few others, and even one thats bigger that isn’t growing into the ground through the pot.
Junglesop seedlings! Won’t be fruiting for a long time, but at least most of them came pre-germinated. Unfortunately I knocked the root off one opening the bag, but the rest are looking good.
I have been potting up loquat seedlings from my tree the past couple weeks. I have 65 1 gallon seedlings and at least 1-200 more in community pots to divide up this week. If I can’t sell and give them away I’m going to have a yard sale next year for them haha. I am just unable to throw away plants. With it being the first year I got fruit I didn’t want to waste any seeds
Edit 118 now, not sure how many more I will separate. This is a lot haha
Do loquats put out more than one flush of fruits a year? I could of sworn I saw some little orange bud like things on the branches of the landscaping loquats we have around town.
No but they could be starting their flower cycle early. Here they show buds early (not yet) but bloom around Christmas
