How does evans compare to the other U of S varieties? Taste wise

UoS cherries probably have a more intense flavor but it is not like Evans doesn’t have a really good flavor. Also UoS are dark cherries, Evans has a beautiful almost neon color in preserves and pies, and they are big, which makes them very satisfying.

My Carmine Jewels definitely get some brown rot, but it doesn’t seem to get out of hand. I’ve also had several start oozing from the trunk then die to the ground, however all but one of those has grown back from the roots just fine. I’ve recently started to give them a dormant copper spray or two in the winter. This is in Ohio, in a somewhat low lying, wet & poorly draining area. I have a few planted in mounds that seem to do better than the others. Here’s my guess on the ā€œdisease resistantā€ spectrum for cherries: Carmine Jewels are about as good as it gets for cherries, but still susceptible… → any cherry pest or disease for your area will still effect them some.

the dwn 2021 chart has Evans/Bali ripening about two months later than most sour cherries, has that been accurate for you or is it maybe a transcription error?

definitely not 2 months later but they are my last sour cherry to ripen, maybe a month after cj, i haven’t really kept notes.

Our northern growing season is what, three months in total? I doubt that evans would be two months behind- that would put it in the middle of winter.

that chart has a couple other errors (for example ā€œmonaā€ sweet cherry should be with black tartarian but is the latest on the chart), maybe evans is actually +2 weeks from montmorency and the chart maker got it switched to months

There is the argument though that ā€˜variety is the spice of life’. :slightly_smiling_face:

That didn’t take long, I finally have my hands on those seven scoundrels

Where did you get them from?

Honeyberryusa, probably. edit: Maybe not, they don’t have the other three muskateers so far as I know.

It’s probably in Canada.

I am happy with HoneyberryUSA because they actually shipped to WA. It is not common to find a nursery that can legally sell certain fruit trees. The Juliet cherry that arrived had plenty of root mass, and she seems to be well adapted to the local climate. I hope it makes a good substitute for a sour cherry tree. I would even be happy if it was only good for jam.
I am interested in Carmine Jewel, but I will be satisfied If I get a decent fruit set with just the one bush.

The talk is real!..however i went to their website. They also have a phone, email and facebook you can DM them… very modern outfit. The Amish and elderly or non internet clients can mail them at their PO Box.

That’s kind of funny @krismoriah
because if they don’t
have internet
they don’t see your suggestion.
