Very old (fruit?) tree ID

Yes I agree with everything you said and I don’t know any other tree that looks like that for the reasons you mentioned. I’m not an expert on hawthorns so at this point I’m just like you pondering which one it is and why it’s there.

Hawthorn. No doubt in my mind. Which species… it’d be a WAG, though C. douglasii is a good likelihood. Planted intentionally, or courtesy of a passing bird… who knows… Cockspur hawthorn (C. crus-galli) is common all over this part of the country, but I dunno about western Nebraska.
No ‘e’ on the end, when you’re talking about the tree… Nathaniel, on the other hand, gets the ‘e’.
