I like yellow transparent better than Lodi . Much the same but yellow transparent is earlier . Hard to beat apples around the fourth of July here . Mostly sauce but mom would make pie with them . Lodi is not that early more like a month later and there are better apples in August .
Slightly unripe Yellow Transparents eaten with salt - excellent. Ditto unripe (all green, firm) mango.
Eww!
funny thing is Lodi is a improved y. transparent yet it seems to be more disease prone than the yellows up here. even yellow is pretty disease prone yet it grows wild everywhere here but only a handful of trees Iāve seen have clean fruit with out spraying. those are usually in a sheltered moist valley suprisingly. the apple loves cold!
thats how my parents/ grandparents ate them and rhubarb! you gotta like sour!
Very interesting comment on the location for yellow transparent. We only have one tree, so I canāt compare locations, but our yellow transparent certainly isnāt the healthiest. While he always blooms very nicely, we only get few fruit.
The tree is on a open/ windy and sunny location but gets mildew anyway. So maybe we chose the location wrongā¦
But even if it doesnāt get sick, bugs seem to love the leaves and crows and apples worms take the fruitā¦
But of course I love the tree anyway because the Klarapfel ( as we call it here) is the earliest apple and just something specialā¦
it was one of the only older apple varieties that would grow here in z3b. so the pioneers here planted it everywhere. they do get bugs but mildew only if put close to other plants. they fruit very heavily here. my parents use to freeze many gallons of sauce for the winter from this variety. our favorite treat was applesauce with cinnamon and a dollop of whipped cream on top.
