What happened to your old orchard?

I was talking to a person helping out at work and supposedly roses don’t like to be transplanted. The ironic part is they likely stole them and they would have died if what my helper says is true

Roses are easy to move. It’s peonies that don’t like to be transplanted. Ask how I know about this.

That’s the end result of lack of child discipline on the bottom end … and lack of teaching religion…
people do anything they please as adults until they get in trouble…
and that is seldom.

That’s odd. I dug up a very large peony a few years ago and then set it on a upside down trash can lid (to hold water) until I decided where to replant it. I never did end up replanting it because I didn’t want to spread the bind weed which was tangled through its roots, but it’s still alive.

It depends on the variety, some are more hardy than others, maybe herbaceous. Tree peonies are a no no. I can’t even dig them out when even when they are planted in the wrong location. I lost a few already, that’s how I know.

I’ve dug up peonies and potted them…usually fall or early spring…and they generally live.
Sometimes get too dry and die in the pots, but if I get 'em in the ground before I kill them, then no problem.

I had a somewhat rude gnome in among my berries out front. he was untouched for years, then one night someone picked all the berries (think I had strawberries at the time) AND took Cornelius! he was one of the gnomes from the 60s that was “doing things”, he was squatting and holding a leaf in his hand (pooping) I’ll never forgive that loss he was my favorite “busy” gnome.

I’ve got one that’s smoking a pipe and a lady gnome that’s holding a moonshine bottle that are from around that time too. they and a few others were all my grandmother’s, and all have embarrassing names

someone once pulled up an entire rose of Sharon from the corner of the lot but I am pretty sure that was a kid picking flowers. I plant a ton of flowers every year out there and encourage people to pick freely, think the kids may have been young and just pulled on it and the whole thing came out. I think this because 1. the plant was found twenty feet away on the sidewalk and 2. from the kitchen, I heard a little kid being told “the sign says you can pick some, it’s ok!” during the time it happened. poor kid. hope he isn’t scared to come back for bachelor buttons and daisies after that

I have heard the stories of someone new to a house losing cut flowers and more often than not that is because the person before them in the house let people pick freely. The father or mother with them should have replanted it instead of pulling it and letting it sit there.

I think it was a younger and older kid. kids and older sibling, probably embarrassed or scared.

I did put up a better sign this year that says “these flowers are for everyone, pick some, leave some, enjoy them”

the old sign just said “you are allowed to pick these flowers! they are for everyone”

the seeds are so cheap I couldn’t think about caring much. it’s an area right by the sidewalk on a busy street, you’d never put anything you valued right there anyway, it might get trampled.
and the plant they pulled up was relatively new, it wasn’t like they had to pull hard haha

I like the fact that they are so easily divided when dug up. My two became 6 and looked healthier too
