It has been several years but I tried on at a local farmer’s market that had been grown in Eastern Washington aka the dry side. It was at least large, good breaking texture with a sweet tart juiciness. I kick myself for not saving the seeds as you probably know will grow the apple is reputed to come true from its seed. It may have been picked a little early. Are you growing Black Twig? My BT Mammoth has what I would consider limbertwig structure. Have you tasted Junaluska yet? I’ve always been curious about that one.
Thanks your Nickajack report gives me optimism, not that I don’t always assume that every variety will be Fab-u-lous. Ha! Maybe I’ll save seed and send it to anyone wanting to grow it out.
Last year I tasted Junaluska from a bag of apples someone sent me. I hope it was not representative as it was blah, meh, nothing to recommend it for fresh eating anyway. A friend at Horne Creek Orchard in NC says he likes it quite a bit at least as one of the better Cherokee apples.
I bench grafted Black Twig years ago and gave them away to people who promptly lost the ID so they can’t tell me how it is. Losing tree ID’s is something of a national pastime in U.S.
Lots of first timers here… The ones i’m most excited about would be my seedling apple (throwing out all kinds of flowers for the first time==this tree was grown in a 7 gallon pot–i moved it to a 15 gallon pot a week ago) ==tree is maybe 4 years from seed…A rabbit did chew on it one year…so maybe that sped it up. I have no idea the parentage but its a very pretty tree…great shape, been very clean growing.
Krymsk 86 rootstock is full of flowers. Have no idea…maybe the american plum next to it will pollinate it or one of the other 30 different trees i have that should be blooming.
Moniqui looks loaded…that will be a first for me. Stark Bros white apricot has a few blooms.
Carmine Jewel is loaded…a first.
2 different pluot seedlings both have flowers…one that i grafted to an apricot, one on its own roots.
A variety of peaches…
Black Twig is a fun apple when happy. Friends on the dry side of WA sold them and I enjoyed them as grown right as a fairly tart, hard apple. Mine haven’t yet lived up to their potential here on the wet side. They are a productive tree and I may have allowed it to over crop.
A new seeding apple tree. Time to break out the champagne. I am continually amazed at how many folks in the north are growing peaches.
My Hosui is putting out its first blossoms. If it fruits, that’ll be my first fruits off a tree I’ve planted.
This could be the year!
Another bad year for me. My cherries look fine albeit a small crop of black gold, montmorency, lapin’s, sweetheart, and Ranier. Seckel, shinseiki, misharasu, keiffer, and Potomac. Chehalis and zestar apples maybe. Although Scarlett Prince and Spice Zee bloomed I don’t see any fruit set.
Tjasko, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your Hosui. Ah, the first time.
Sorry to hear your cropping is poor Speedster. Did an early freeze mess it up? I would be surprised if I get much from the cherries this year as the winds were gusting hard the other day and I haven’t had a single bee show up yet. This weather is something else.
Whitegold cherries on Krymsk.5 forming fast…
Apple fruitlets on Red Gravenstein, which grows like a maniac, even on the demure Budagovsky.9.
A tiny pear fruitlet on Harrow Sweet/ OHxF.87.
I’ve got peaches forming. This branch of Blushingstar has half a dozen fruitlets.
Same idea with Baby Crawford:
This nubbin on White Lady peach is plumpin up pronto.
I have Romeo cherry setting teeny little fruitlets! I just planted it this winter, lol. I’ll be really happy if I get to taste a few of my own cherries this year None of my cherries are mature enough yet.
I’ve got a serious case of peach envy. I will probably enclose an area under an outside landing with Lexan aND toss a peach, nectarine and maybe fig under cover for 3/4 of a year. Our Summers have become fairly warm and dry.
This year will be first apples from: Junaluska, Nickajack, Buckingham, Parks Pippin, Hall, Caney Fork Limbertwig (LT), Red Royal LT, Kentucky LT, Boskoop, Sundance, Democrat, Virginia Beauty, Plan to have a tasting event with friends.
I finished thinning peaches today. We’ll get our first tastes of Bonita, Late Crawford, Duke of York, Rio Oso Gem, and Silver Logan.
Sigh. Peach envy increases… I hope they do well for you. I just realized I have to cover my sweet cherries before they bloom, thanks to some winged varmits!
These are some things that hopefully will ripen for the first time. Brady

Peach/Nectarine
Trees look beautiful. Congrats on new fruit! I look forward to growing a peach and nectarine behind Lexan.
I’m just going to post a list and no pics, after last year being a total bust. This year is looking good(fingers crossed) for many things that I have.
Northpole columnar apple
Golden sentinel columnar apple (first time and in it’s in it’s 6th leaf!)
Scarlet sentinel columnar apple
Tomcot apricot (a dozen or two dozen)
Harglow apricot (only one or two)
Burgundy plum (finally now for the first time, in it’s 5th leaf)
Black Ice plum (last time this had plums was back in 2014, Toka has been blooming too late most years here to pollinate)
Toka plum (Not too many, maybe a dozen, over the last couple of years complete limbs have died)
Miller’s big blue plum (last year I got 4 and it was the first year to get any, this year looks like many dozens of them!)
Flavor grenade (Just planted last year and may get 2 or 3 this year)
Flavor heart (Had some blooms and was just planted last year but looks like I’ll get get 0 this year)
Spring satin plumcot (The tree is filled with them, fruits for the first time this year and will have to thin them)
Nadia plum (Not sure how many I will have currently, only have a couple on the lower part of the tree, most blooms were up around 9’ near the top. I did prune about 3’ off the tops but wanted to keep some blooms/fruit)

Jan sour cherry
Joel sour cherry
Bing sweet cherry
Nugent sweet cherry
Vandalay sweet cherry

Chojuro Asian pear
Hosui Asian pear

Moonglow euro pear
Have some dwarf apple trees that are blooming and am not sure if I should let one apple grow on each of them since they were planted just last year. Some here have said yes to other people that this has happened to and others have said no, not to let even 1 grow. These are…
Freyberg
Kidd’s orange red
Think this is everything for this year but I’m not sure.
I got peaches plumpin up!
Varieties with fruitlets include: Harrow Diamond, Gold Dust, White Lady, Redhaven, Baby Crawford, Blushingstar and O’Henry.
Just a few strawberries here, planted last year. We didn’t take real good care of them last year, but they seemed to multiply a bit. This year they look decent, they got some fertilizer, and have some big leaves growing, but not too much fruit.
We did sample a couple today, both the size of a quarter. Not bad, a little tart, and sweet, but had good flavor. Still don’t know what variety they are, my wife got them from her cousin in Ohio.
I guess you can say these are the first fruit we’ve ever tried that we actually planted.
We called our local nursery, and they said their strawbs are ready, so we’re going to try and pick some this weekend.
Our old apple trees bloomed and have fruited a lot, mostly Milam’s, but there is a mystery apple on the same fenceline that we’ve never seen produce much before. So we hope it gives us some tasty fruit.
