Sorry it took me so long to get this from my daughter. It’s from ‘The Beautiful Cookbook: Asian Flavors’ pg 235 she substituted canna root for the yams and in place of bamboo shoot she used petals from a musa bajoo banana flower.

How are your Turks cap coming along? I ordered some seeds which sprouted quite quickly! Because I am impatient I got 2 started plants as well. The seeds are regular red type and the started plants are a pink flower and a red cultivar called ‘big momma’ I’m hoping I get to taste them before we get a freeze.

My seeds haven’t sprouted yet. I sure hope they do eventually . . .!

Oh boo! I was shocked how quickly mine sprouted, a couple days I think. I did a very quick cold stratification in the fridge. I got them from Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/1789573304/turks-caps-malvaviscus-arboreus-5-seed?ref=yr_purchases and they seemed very fresh & the seller sent waaay more than listed amount of seeds.

Think about it I should also plug the seller I got the plants from because they were super nice healthy plants. & as of today I have a blossom on big momma !

Wow, that rocks! I think the seeds I got from an Ebay seller were old, so maybe they were a little more recalcitrant about sprouting. I’ll have to try that Etsy seller you recommended!

Hopefully I’ll have some seeds soon I’d be able to share. That blossom in the picture fell off while I was out of town and I imagine if there had been a fruit it would have been gobbled up by my chickens. But there is another now just like it.

Well, that’s good news!

I love that it can flower and start fruiting so quickly after being planted. That’s very promising!

The Achocha vines grew like crazy but didn’t yield many pods until now. I don’t think the flowers appreciated the hot dry spell in the middle of the summer. Now that it’s cooled off a bit and raining more, they are finally putting on more pods. Maybe a bit too late though. The pods are also paler than some of the pictures online. A better trellis that lets the plant sprawl and gets more sunlight into the center of the plant is probably in order.

The seeds are cool looking. They look a bit like black snapping turtles.

Cool!!! I’ve wanted to get some seed for these (might have even bought some at the beginning of this season and forgot…) I had no idea the seeds look so cool!
