The morning haul:

Just starting to flower here. It’ll be awhile. They look good. How many plants do you have?

I have seven BB in containers.

Perfect shot for a magazine! Bet they tasted good too!

That does sound good. I am not sure I even know what chicken fricasee is though… after a couple batches of breaded and butter fried I am always ready to try something else.

I am pretty sure they are mycorhizial with river birch. I found more in 3 or 4 patches of <2 in diameter river birch than everywhere else. I have read one patent or something that you could cultivate them by innoculating then coppicing birch or elm.

Interesting. But there ya go; I lack both the river birch and the morels. My property is loaded with interesting looking fungi, but none that I recognize as unquestionably edible. Unexpected trees keep popping up in my little woods, though. I’ve been surprised to find tulip poplars growing, because I’d never spied any wild ones in the area, but they also vanished. Each time a mimosa appears and blooms, it makes me happy. Almost any volunteer tree that isn’t cedar, pine, or sweet gum makes me glad to see it. A few red buds have created a home here in recent years. This spring’s surprise was a blooming dogwood. No birches of an kind, though.

Myers Royal Limbertwig has a few flowers! I might get my first taste of this apple this year!

Same with Whitegold. I might get my first handful of cherries this year!

Gingergold and Goldrush looking strong as usual.

And Red Gravenstein is flowering prolifically.

Today, I spread wood mulch in the garden and discovered that the little pawpaw tree I bought and planted last year has a little flower bud on its little branch! I’m sure it’s not going to take since the tree is like less than 12" tall and I don’t see anyone of my neighbor has a pawpaw tree and it may not even able to blossom as a matured flower due to its young age. I think it’s Paw Paw’s God just tickles to get me going! :astonished:

Bagging a plum is a pain. So much to learn.

Millenia blueberry. I planted this SH about four years ago and it has been a consistent good bearer with a pretty good overall taste. Of the varieties I have it is the only one that has clusters somewhat like grapes. Sometimes you get lucky.

That is a very nice looking blueberry. It’s one I haven’t grown.

Apricot blooms opened today. We are expecting a freeze the next two mornings. I’m a little worried.

Auburn! Why are you bagging plums? I think you’re only inviting brown rot. I’ve never bagged a plum, only netted and it works beautifully. I net the entire tree then secure it around the trunk.

Bagging the whole tree sounds like it would be a better alternative than my bags. I’m curious as to what type netting material your using. I only have 6 plums to protect this season but I know that I need a better way to do this. Thanks, Bill

Not bagging, netting. Go to American Nettings .com. They have green nets to fit the size of almost any tree. Works like a charm. And you can spray through it for brown rot.

Thanks

I think @BobVance bags his cots.

Today I planted a huge mystery fig stump donated to me by a friend who doesn’t want it. Some kind of green fig w/ red interior-- probably Green Ischia aka Strawberry Verte or something similar.

I also grafted in 4 new apple varieties:
-Baker’s Delicious
-Candycrisp
-Kentucky Limbertwig
-Red Fuji #2

I would have done more, but the wife demanded I return home!

Yup. Here is a pic from last year.

I used the cloth bags one time, but had problems with them. The biggest issue is that the tiny cot would get lost in the huge bag and I would clumsily knock it off when trying to bag it.

My father didn’t have any brown rot problems with plastic bags on peaches last year, so I’ll probably give it a try on both peaches and plums. He gave me some bags the way he prepares them and I described it here.

**- please note that I haven’t kept up with this thread (since the 2015 version…). I just read the last few posts because Matt @ ed me, but I may be responding a bit out of context if this part of the conversation goes more than a few posts back.
