Which apple rootstock should i use?

That’s so cool , I wish I could start an orchard like that! But sadly I have my tiny side of the hill. What size do you mean as perfect Derek? I’m still struggling hard to decide which rootstock to buy… my soil sure is chalky and has some clay but endless rainy days are a rarity

M111 produces trees that average 12 feet high but that depends on variety. Some grow taller like Northern Spy, Antonovka or Gravenstein. And that height is enough so my enemy, deer, cannot just walk over and eat them bare.

What spacing would you suggest?
also thank you very much!

I spaced them out using what is called “Pennsylvania staggered” that I found on the University of Pennsylvania School of Agriculture web site. So say you plant semi dwarf apple trees 12 feet apart in rows and then the next row is 12 feet back with the trees staggered so they are lined up in the middle of trees in the row in front of them.

I was thinking of a similar system as well !
You think 4 (13 feet) meters between a tree and another is ok if I use M111 and prune the tree to remain relatively small? (3 meters high and wide )

yes that would work.
