White Gold sweet cherry KGB pruned

Balaton is supposed to be fabulous. Jon Clements of UMass says it makes a superior cherry pie.

Bob-- How is Balaton performing for you?

I grew mine in a pot for several years, which is really to say that I held it on the cusp of death. I planted it in ground this past winter, but it hasn’t put on much growth, but I wouldn’t really blame the tree. Maybe I should get a branch of it started on one of my bigger trees (Northstar or Danube)

I think I’ve gotten 3-5 cherries off it in some past years, which didn’t strike me as particularly good or bad.

Honeyberryusa.com has a good selection.

I may try Romance series sometime. I just want to graft several varieties on the existing tree. What I do not like about them is that they seem to grow very slowly in the first years. I’ll wait for more reviews about them.

I agree that Danube is just a poor producer. Even worse is Jubileum. It comes out this winter. It’s not pollination, because I have a huge sweet cherry, plus 4 Montmorencies, A Surefire, 2 Danubes, and 2 balatons, plus a couple of seedlings.
I don’t know yet about Balaton or Surefire, they’re young, but Montmorency is a champ.

Hi @BobVance and @Antmary, did you two end up trying any of these higher brix Russian tart cherries? I was curious to hear how it turned out. Thanks.
