I think the “wild fig” is unique in that fig is so easy to propagate and there is no pattern with those “wild figs”. When someone “find” a good fig seedling, everyone wants to get a piece. All get the right to name it. It is not “first comes, first serves”. It is a wild “gold rush”. We’ve seen Western movies with hundreds of folks lined up to claim their prize for the best land parcel. Be strong or weak, old or young, sick or well etc.
Then within one year of the initial fig distribution, we’ll see many other sellers who want to recover the premium they paid to buy the first batch cuttings. It is all business.
Rather meaty interior. Very sweet and “tastes like some berry not a fig” according to a non fig aficionado. I found it very sweet and a heck a lot better than expected.
For the east coasters, I most likely have the wasp although I never seem to be able to spot them.
Los Santos 2 and Atreano? They also have the same color interior, leaf shape, fruit size, and flavor description.
Maybe it is a seedling, or an Atreano tree got hacked up and tossed in the weeds where it grew, maybe there was a landslide, who knows. Even without casting aspersions, claiming that a full grown tree is a unique seedling is problematic.
@hoosierbanana , check out Drews post above, he points out many differences, including neck, pulp, size, shape and taste. Pretty obvious differences, and how did you obtain your LS2? I don’t even have that one yet, and I trade cuttings with the finder of that tree often. So you have one to compare? Drew does.
I would agree with that too. I plan and simple, just like growing new plants for my own interest. Not just figs all kinds of fruit. New fruit every year, always!
Exceptions to every rule. I have no plans to sell any. I may or may not. I don’t need the money so it’s more work I don’t need. I have no objections to handing out cuttings for postage. Plants are different, I need a plant back. I’m only looking for three right now, yes expensive ones.
Cool! 107 grams wow!
Los Santos 2 is so green when ripe, I had two rot on me, as I could not tell they were ripe argh! You have to feel them. I never seen another fig like that. Most tend to change color.
Atreano is a terrible fig for me, it’s a shame as it is so productive and big. Most big figs I don’t like, some exceptions. Los Santos 2 doesn’t really appear to be Adriatic even though taste is similar, it’s way too small. I will weigh the next one. The photos I posted were of the first fig ever from this tree. Interior appeared much redder on the rotted ones. I have one that needs two days but I’m leaving tomorrow. I will probably harvest it. I will weigh it and such.
It was bland yes, watered down. As was just about every fig I picked that day. All the same I’m lucky as heavy rains have been ruining stone fruit crops all over the eastern US. My stone fruit is perfect, so no complaints from me over a couple days harvest of figs lost.
A fig that is juicy with light flavor in socal is probably going to be watery and bland here most of the time.
I saw that someone recently compared Exquisito and Nardi Black, and couldn’t tell them apart. What puzzled me is the first reaction was the Nardi could have been mislabeled, rather than wondering if Exquisito was not actually a seedling, or a seller is taking advantage of the similarities and is passing off a Sicilian Red type to cash in quick. I noted the similarities as soon as I saw pictures of Exquisito, but it didn’t seem like anyone was interested because it was beyond reproach as a seedling.
At any rate, when high prices are involved there could be problems. If LS2 ends up the next hot variety, sellers could possibly pass off Atreano.
I doubt that since the guy is well off with acres of property in California and I never seen him sell anything? I really don’t care one bit about people’s motives. I would never buy figs anyway when I can trade for anything I want or ask friends for favors.
I find it a rather cheap hobby.
Well I read up on Los Santos 2 and it is a big fig. My plant is only a foot tall and produced small figs, but that is not typical. Appears figs can be as big as 100 grams. Mine are under 40. Bet that changes in coming years.
Eric said to let them hang past ripe but right now with the yellow jackets I cannot. The plant has three more figs that need at least a week. Soon the Yellowjackets will go away and maybe I can let it hang longer.
So I picked the almost ripe one as the yellowjackets started feeding on it.
Flavor on this one was still a touch watered down, citrus, slight berry and acidic. I already decided it’s a keeper. Especially if it gets to 100 grams or more. Flesh is slightly darker, and I bet deep red if I could let it hang, Like I said I should be able to let the next figs hang longer as it becomes colder. Skin is super thin and the greenest fig when ripe I have seen.
So you don’t care if people pass off a readily available variety as one which is selling for top dollar? That could affect your trading too you know.
Anyway, Atreano can have a neck. Neck size and shape vary for any variety. I can pick 2 figs off of the same tree and point out lots of differences like color, size, shape, splitting etc.
Imagine when it is 2 different trees, grown in different conditions. Here’s an example of just how different a variety can be, these are the same variety but one is in a container and one is in the ground.
It would be totally dishonest of me to distribute the one in a container as unique, and it did go back to normal coloration the next year. But still, someone else might have taken the opportunity to enrich themselves if they didn’t care about the community. And they may get away with it if they have enough social support, with people asking, how dare you question so and so.
I guess I don’t care what other people do. I’m too busy having fun growing figs.
I’m not really interested in what others think. So if you wish to think this fig is Atreano fine. No skin off my nose. I’m extremely pleased to own it. A nice addition to the collection. Also sorry for anybody else who wants cuttings I can only do a few this year. Try at Ourfigs.
I said it looks like Atreano, and honestly, I don’t know how anyone could not see the similarities and be concerned about the potential for someone to pass off Atreano as LS2. Those 2-3 years to evaluate turned into 2-3 figs pretty quick, btw.
I said it might not be a seedling. Unless someone has a time machine, they are guessing or making an informed decision at best when they stumble onto a mature tree. I’ve never read a detailed reason, with supporting evidence, as to why this was judged a seedling. You telling me it is doesn’t convince me any more than that corn fig story.
From a pure fig planting purpose, I would consider planting unknowns in my area and the unknown “seedlings” from wasp country about the same. We all spend the time to trial them and expect the good results. I’ve already discovered at least two unknown figs that fit certain descriptions and belong to certain groups. It is exciting to do so.
I surely can see the huge potential on the commercial side with the potential of discovering a brand new fig variety. Or hitting a home run. That is just not easy though. It needs some really hard work to discover them. Then the efforts to bring them to the market. It is totally different from sending some free newly discovered seedlings to friends to trial and have fun.
