Shale_Creek
Shale Creek is a farm located in East TN almost exactly between Knoxville and Chattanooga. Our farm is a second full-time job for both my wife (Barbara) and myself (David). We currently have over 200 fruit trees and are in the process of planting another 200. We also have a 30x96 High Tunnel exclusively for Blackberry. The farm also carries about 12-20 head of Angus cattle.
We’ve lived on this farm since 2011 and every year we expand/adjust just a little bit more in order to make the farm more profitable and to one day be able to retire here while still keeping busy and making a modest income (That goal is still a ways away).
Our zone is 7a. E-Tn, being what it is, is not an easy climate to grow in. High levels of fungus, numerous insects that love fruit, and a slew of squirrels that need constant culling.
My background is Chemistry (MS Chem) and my job has moved me around the country several times. The nice advantage I have over many growers is that I do actually understand the soil chemistry and chemicals don’t strike fear into my heart as it does many. With my production experience that knowledge/experience has really helped us out on the farm… and it’s FUN!! (THE most important part).
If you’re reading this I wonder why. Hopefully I haven’t become overly arrogant or ticked you off in some way. If I have, I apologize. If you’re just curious, no issue and you’re more than welcome to ask me anything you’d like. I won’t discuss my day job. There are just too many people that like to Doxx and I really don’t want to deal with that.
Happy Growing !!!
