I live in Philadelphia (in the city) on a little yard with a little family. I have spent time in Upstate NY, Michigan, Georgia, and Marseille.

I teach and do some research for a living, and use a bike as much as I can to get around.

When I settled in here, there were two big old but ailing apple trees in the front yard, probably Gravenstein or Summer Rambo, and I love fresh tart apples so I got into grafting hoping to preserve one. We lost both to fireblight, which probably took out those early grafts as well. Now we have a variety of smaller fruit trees (and native azaleas), and although some have outgrown the deer, they haven’t started to overwhelm the squirrels yet

I’m a member of Backyard Fruit Growers, which is a great resource that I recommend highly to mid-atlantic state residents. And we benefit from some other great local organizations like TreePhilly and Farm to City.
