staalmannen

Swedish expat in Belgium | Very interested in hobby breeding projects.
I am especially interested in getting Nordic/Arctic Rubus flavors in more easy-to-cultivate hybrid variants.

Planned breedings:

"goldberry" breeding
Loganberry x cloudberry
Tayberry x cloudberry
Columbia Star x cloudberry
(white blackberry (Polar berry) x cloudberry) x yellow raspberry (Fall gold)

cloudberry x blackberry breedings described before, but no mention if fertile. I will use cloudberry as female, but also do the reciprocal cross. The idea is to either self (or intercross between reciprocal offspring if sex determination depends on the parent) to F2 and then select top performing material. Alternatively, 1 generation back-cross to cloudberry and then F2. Clones will be selected according to the following criteria:
Pre-harvest:

  1. size, vigor
  2. (self)fertility, yield

Post-harvest:

  1. berry color
  2. flavor

introgression of vigorous growth in R. arcticus

Japanese wineberry x allfieldberry (Rubus arcticus ssp. xstellarcticus)

The breeding and selection will be similar to what is outlined above. In contrast to the old “nectar raspberry” breeding that back-crossed against raspberry, I will rather back-cross with allfieldberries if needed. A top trait to look for in F2 is self-fertility. If fertility is an issue in F1, I will attempt cross-polination between different F1 clones and also back-crossing with a non-parental allfieldberry clone.
