Not sure about rare, but almost any seeds I ended up buying at Amazon because of lack of reputable sources were either not true to kind or didn’t germinate. So, do not hold your breath so much for it).

Seeds are different Galinas I kind of steer clear of those but the plants are rated sellers with several years of reviews. I’ve bought plants on there with no problems. Just check the reviews before you buy anything just like ebay.

Clark,
The question would be will those plants be true to labels?. I looked at the pic of Chicago fig you posted, the leaves of that fig looked quite differently from my Chicago figs.

I personally think it is quite risky buying anything from a source I don’t know well.

There is definitely a risk I agree. Many of the sellers you get to know. The one Chicago hardy plant I posted I have not purchased from that seller before. I just look and see if they have a few years of reviews and if the do and the reviews are acceptable I purchase from the. Like nurseries some of the plants will not be true to type. Just a few nurseries I would count on and you can’t but cinnamon or vanilla from them unfortunately.

Those all seem to be from Hirt’s or Wellspring, so most are tissue culture plants. Not a bad thing, just FYI. Wellspring has a nice website that people seem to have good experience with.

Ampersand,
Their reviews are very positive on Amazon but I went ahead and plugged them in on google to just follow up on your comment " what’s the scoop on http://wellspringgardens.com " and they had no negative results on http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/3735/. They had one neutral and I think the other 75 were positive. Could they still mislabel a tree? absolutely no nursery is 100% safe but more than worth the risk to me. The other comments above from mamuang and galinas are well taken to we can get burned on eBay or amazon in a hurry by dealing with the wrong people. The goal for me with this post is trying to help people get the plants their after at the right price. Not everyone has a lot of money and these plants are a fantastic way to get that rare plant for a minimal price. I’m a huge fan of oikos nursery for the same reason.

Actually they’re $9.99, so you have to buy 5 to get the $20 off. And there’s shipping. So it’s more like $38 / 5 = $7.60 each for 5. Still a pretty good deal. I just don’t know where i’d put them…

For $7.50 each put them in a pot or bag and grow them out until fall. By then you will figure out where to put them. The sale is just about over.

They don’t ship them until fall anyways…

Sugarcane $24 for a Couple of pieces! Wow, I could get rich! I’m literally surrounded by thousands apon thousands of acres sugarcane. I wonder if people are buying it? That’s crazy!

There is a big trend now towards juicing sugar cane. I don’t do it but it could be juiced at festivals and several dollars a glass could be made just like cider. We can’t grow it here so we grow sweet sorghum. Rum is also getting to be a bigger thing. Again most people don’t have the liscense to make rum but they can sell cane to the people who do. Organic sugar and many other uses are popular. I could see people paying a lot to get started. I’m surrounded by several acres of Aronia’s and cows but people pay a lot for both just depending where your at. That is a lot of money I agree but it seemed like a rare type.

Yeah , like they say , location location location.

They list the “Chicago” fig as native to the northern U.S. That is not correct.

They also say that the coffee trees normally grow 2-3 ft in height. It’s more like 3 - 5 meters tall.

I actually ordered 2 Chicago hardy plants from another supplier on amazon but they are out of plants now. The supplier I listed I’m not familiar with but there are plenty of others on there selling CH that might be better. Matt i think a lot of these people selling stuff like that have no idea besides what they have been told. There is tons of misinformation out there.

Muddy,
Wow that’s a big difference sounds like all the nurseries selling carmine Jewell’s. They told me 5-6’ max height and no suckering when I bought them. They are 8’ and sucker profusely. I rely on what you guys say but not fruit tree companies.

The trees are kept trimmed down to about 6’ for ease of harvesting. After several years when production slows down, they are cut way down to almost nothing, and allowed to regrow, which reinvigorates the trees.

I bought 10 carmine jewels from Michigan Bulb a few years ago from a similar sale. They shipped the plants early fall. The plants were very small but healthy. I think they were potted, not bare root. They didn’t do much the first year but are now a few feet tall.

If your getting 10 today maybe buy 5 under your name and 5 under a family member to take advantage of the sale. Seems fair to me if your buying 10 to still get the deal on all of them. Some people may not figure that’s fair but it would still be paying shipping twice. They may have a limit of one per household I’m not sure but most families are in more than one house.
