GRIN: Home Edition

There has been some recent talk on the forums regarding programing making new apps and websites to support growers like us. I my self even have an idea in mind. But before I dive in, I wanted to understand better what is out there and what people need.

The good people at the USDA GRIN (Germplast Resources Information Network) publish the Website and Database for world wide consumption. And are currently boasting over 20 sites using or evaluating GRIN-Global. Now maybe they can add one more. https://grin.deltatype.com/gringlobal/search.aspx .

I posted this version of the GRIN so I could learn how orginzations actualy track all this data so I can better understand how to develop an App and applications that might be used by regular home users. I would love to open this GRIN to users of Growingfruit and get feedback. So if your interested sign up and PM me to get a internal login.

GRIN is a collection of semi-autonomous sites funded by the USDA. They have boundaries but also internal policies. If you wish to keep track of those variances then perhaps you will be successful. For a few outliers, I suggest you try TARS and the National Arboretum.

Sorry I posted an incomplete URL https://grin.deltatype.com/gringlobal/search.aspx

I haven’t figured this search out. No matter what I enter I get either “no data found” or an error message. Can someone give me an example of a search term that works.

Richard, I am not particularly looking at resource management. In the database you have to assign inventory management policy and its that part at least is relatively strait forward. What I am trying to understand is how Observation and descriptors are managed. Observations are tedious and If it can be made easier people would be more included to do them.

There is not much data in there yet. Just the apples I plan to graft this year. a blank search and checking include unavailable will turn up everything.

OK, I understand now.

Predictions are not my primary goal. The descriptors used by USDA’s GRIN are a result of each sites own criteria. There is a proposed international standard for descriptors and also the option of just creating ones relevant to the community. My first goal is to learn how to wheel works before trying to reinvent it.

This is the proposed international standards

I am going to implement those in my version of GRIN and finally make an app that helps with data collection. The data from the app could feed back into GRIN or a better more community focused app/site like yours.
