2020 Fruit & vegetable storage / preservation - freezer in a shop, barn or garage?

It’s actually completely false to think a freezer is not meant for the outdoors but not every freezer is. Most freezers are meant for the indoors. There are special freezers meant for the outdoors or garages. I start out by checking which freezers are best for hot garages

You may want a freezer with a lock if it’s outdoors. Animals and people will steal your food. Solar powered equipment is more efficient and sometimes much less expensive than some over time. Some people are off grid and may want to consider propane refrigerators etc. Such as servel http://www.servelrefrigerators.com .
More facts can be seen here Servel gas refrigerators from the early 1900's until present day.. What are you doing to preserve your food in 2020? By the way a servel refrigerator uses about 8 gallons of propane per month Servel Propane or Kerosene Refrigerator
With solar becoming popular its good to know sundanzer was designed by nasa https://thesolarstore.com/sundanzer-dcf390-390-liter-147-cubic-ft-dc-freezer-p-1878.html
You may be wondering how to calculate your needs. Keep in mind if your off grid its more efficient to not lose energy in converting ac to dc or vice versa just stay dc in the first place First Off-Grid Solar Freezer (for Dummies) | Peak Prosperity
Topics such as drying fruits eg. pears have already been discussed Drying pears - natures best candy! so i will not revisit those well covered topics. If you follow my posts you may already know what im up to but if you dont i’m planning to put a deep freezer in my barn https://growingfruit.org/t/barn-construction/12832 . I’m still debating if i need water or propane to the barn but have not ruled it out.

7 years is a good amount of time. Do you cover it with blankets or anything else?

Humm…that depends on how you look at it.
I have a OLD servel natural gas powered refrigerator.
As you mentioned in your opening post.
I got it in the 1980s , I was said to be 40 yrs old then,
So add 40 more years …,!
Puts it at ~ 80 yrs !
! ! !
Still runs like a top…makes ice too.!

A old timer came to visit once and said he had a job selling that very model before ww2… (confirming its age )
He said he had a hard time selling them because the electric ones were cheaper.
I bet not many of the old electric ones have lasted that long ?
I keep fruit in it in the fall, scion wood in spring,
beer in the summer.
Works great
~ 80 years old !
I did have to make a new door seal out of weather stripping.
Could not find a new original seal :grinning:
Could use a paint job , it’s a little old looking, but I like it that way.

The trouble with most barns and sheds is rodents. They are very resourceful.

@Hillbillyhort yes servel normally outlast their owner or close to it. Eventually the burners start to clog and they are no longer safe to use inside a home where you sleep due to co2. A man i knew passed away 10 years ago and was using one that stopped working i think he said from the 1940s. Lets face it American made had a meaning once my farmall m can be running in a day and is a 1943.
