I have around 50 wild persimmon seedlings trying to grow out in my fields… which gets bushhogged 2x a year…

Normally in June or July… and then again in October.

I can simply go out there b4 the first bushhoging… and locate and cage a few nice wilds… put some mulch around them… and by fall they will be around 4 ft tall half inch diameter.

These little persimmons have been trying to grow in my field for years… but have been getting bushhogged 2x a year… and they keep coming back.

They have a nice established root system in place already… and as long as I stop mowing them down for a year… they can easily grow between 4-5 ft in one season. Ideal for grafting.

All of those smaller persimmon seedlings that i grafted to this spring… were bushhogged last July and by season end were 3 ft tall and 5/16 diameter.

Think i have the ideal source for persimmon rootstocks.

@TNHunter
That’s how I got started with them here ,they come up everywhere.
Then I started grafting to the ones that where in a row .

On the question of rootstock size…

This WS8-10 was grafted to the smallest wild DV out in my field… of the ones i selected to keep last fall. It was only 2.5 ft tall, 1/4 Inch diameter… but it has taken and is looking great.

When I retire… hopefully soon… we plan to build and this baby will be in the corner of my front yard

I may be having better luck with my smaller rootstocks because of their more established root systems.

This is the graft done to that larger persimmon in my field. It was near 5 ft and half inch diameter.

It has been slow… but seems to be kicking in now. We have some heat coming in the forecast… hopefully speed these up some.

This one will be easy to fertilize… it is right behind my compost pile

Daily high temperatures are finally going to stay above 70 in the 10-day forecast. I grafted Kassandra this evening to a rootstock in ground and one in a pot.

Here’s a look at a JT-02 I grafted last year on newly planted rootstock.

Yeah, grafting weather here too. Just finished up a week of rain. Maybe 5-6” worth here. I’m behind on my grafting, which I guess means I’m right on schedule. Apples and beach plums are first in line. Mulberries not far behind. I’m probably 2-3 weeks out on Persimmons

Some of my persimmon grafts looking happy.

NG has not done much… but is showing some bud swell now… we have heat now… long string of 80s… perhaps that helps.

Last pic above is my new IKKJ … it is cranking out some growth now.

Checked ZK on my lunch hour… (above) looking pretty good.

Also checked Prok and two grafts of Coroa De Ria… ZK is the only one of those with much progress so far. Prok was the last one l grafted… may just need more time and heat.

Been watching this persimmon tree (below) near my mailbox… and found this today. Think those must be male persimmon flowers.

We had some warm days this passed week I was skeptical that it would be enough for our persimmons to leaf out but I think being in plant tubes made it happen. The next week is cooler. Highs of 60 and nightly lows of 40’s Should I go ahead and graft the now even if it is cool and cloudy?

I think over the next days the leaves will be expanding to the small squirrel ear size. Looking for confirmation that it is go time

I’d wait for 70

My 10 day now has mid 80s for highs and mid 60s for lows…

Earlier in this thread it was recomended to me to have highs of 65-70 before grafting persimmons.

Good luck with yours.

@murky … another bummer on persimmon jam… we ate part of that pint of low sugar persimmon jam … and kept the rest in the pint jar in the fridge until this past weekend… one week in the fridge…

The entire surface of the jam that had been exposed to air had turned black… like it oxidized really bad (like avacado does). Not appealing at all. Trashed it.

I will have to find other ways to preserve persimmons. Drying and freezing pulp… I will try that.

I am needing to start making a farm sized dehydrator for all my excess fruits n winter needs… I have food grade steel wire mesh. need to make a box attach a fan and heat…

Got this one (6 trays) for my birthday a while back. Persimmons, figs, elderberries… do all you can.

Just a short walk from our Walmart parking lot… I first noticed this wild DV a couple years ago early December still loaded with persimmons.

I have harvested nice crops from it the last two years. Looks like it might be another good year for it.

Where it is located it only gets direct sun in the afternoon maybe 3-4 hours.

Checked on a few persimmon grafts today… these are sure looking happy.

NG for a while there… just did not do much… but is starting to show good signs now.

Looks like I may have a Kassandra and NG growing about 3 inches apart.

Those are grafted to the 2 wilds i grew from seed last year. I never tried to separate them. My sisters wild trees are double trees and they do well. Hopefully my Kassandra and NG will get along.

Starting to show some success here as well. All DV rootstocks grafted with local selections with characteristics favorable for wildlife (early, late dropping)

Out in my field today starting to find several wild DV showing up. They come up with multiple shoots… i took out all the smaller ones leaving the largest to grow for next springs grafting. These will be 4 to 5 ft tall and half inch diameter by fall.

My last graft of the season… Prok…is starting to look promising.
