2023 Persimmon Grafting

A persimmon seedling popped up in my in-laws yard in WV 5 or 6 years ago. It got mowed down at least once in the early days and is now a multistem tree. I’ve been planning to graft it over to a bunch of hybrids and got the chance this weekend. I put on Nikita 4, Sosnovskaya, JT-02, Sovietski, Rosseyanka and Bozhi Dar hybrids, plus a couple of grafts of the American persimmon Ruby. I’ll only be out there once a month or so at the most, so we’ll see how they do with all the shoots coming out of the rootstock that will compete with the grafts.

This is PVNA multi-grafted tree I did about a week ago. This was a Rosseyanka that the cicadas hit so hard the top died. Three good shoots came up from the rootstock and I’ve now grafted them over to Coffee Cake, Zenji Maru and Kujinaja (hybrid PVNA). This is a mixture of whip and tongue on a side branch on each side trunk, plus a cleft on top with two scions in each of the three trunks. There was also a good secondary shoot off the middle trunk so I put Bozhi Dar on that for added pollination.

It will be interesting to see how this grows out. I may reduce it to two trunks or even just one down the road.

Ruby is a good one. Miller is very similar but ripens later and over a shorter period of time.

@zendog … i have a hard time focusing on your grafts… those red flowers are quite the show.

California poppies, or maybe Papaver rhoeas?

Those are rhoeas (common poppies or corn poppies), but I have some California poppies scattered around. I tossed some seed out one February a few years ago and they’ve reseeded ever since. Probably the easiest thing to grow and a nice early flower.

@TNHunter happy to send you some seeds if you want to try them.

@zendog … yes … would love to try those.

When do you get seeds ?

Are both Kujinaya and Bliznetskaya PVNA? Have one Bliznetskaya and multiple Kujinaya.

I believe the last information we had from @KYnuttrees was that kujinaja was PVNA, but Bliznetskaya was not. Hopefully if your trees are more mature you can let us know what you see when they fruit.

My trees are young, but growing fast. I grafted them on 2 yr old virginiana seedlings.

I’ll probably start collecting seeds in a month, possibly sooner. You literally just scatter them on open ground sometime in late January to the end of February (depending on your zone) and they come up pretty well. They’ll reseed where they are (and where the rain washes seeds if there is any grade), but if you collect seed and spread them in late winter you’ll get more plants.

Couple of chip buds starting to grow a bit.

My compost pile JT02… really taking off now.

Last graft of Prok… looking better.

ZK hanging in there.

CDR in both locations is not looking good. Hate that… they traveled so far

My new IKKJ is growing nicely.

Kassandra on the larger DV i grew from seed last year is looking stout.

NG on the smaller DV grown from seed… is making progress.

This WS8-10 is growing well… pushing 4 shoots now… and even has flowers forming already.

Is that ok ? Leave them or take them off ?

Also since that WS8-10 is on my smallest rootstock… 1/4 inch… 1 ft tall to graft… should i limit the shoots to one or two… so it grows taller ?

I would rather that it starts branching out at 3 or 4 ft… not at 1 ft.

Recommendations ?

Thanks

Yes, I would. I usually do a 2 bud stick and thin to one once I have a sense how much they’re going to grow. If they’re growing crazy fast, I might let the other shoot grow just to sap some of the extra vigor.

Thanks… i will do that.

Sure thing. Yeah, you get some scionwood to give away too if you let the other one grow.

Also, I like to leave a bud or two at the base of that shoot just in case something happens to the shoot I plan to keep.

My Prok was the last one grafted… and it is starting to really take off now. Looks like success to me.

A couple weeks ago i sort of gave up on CDR… it was grafted 2 or 3 weeks before Prok and was showing no signs of life. I even took the tree cage off it and put it on something else that was growing well.

And today… checked that CDR and found this…

The beauty from Portugal lives… HAPPY.

I’m really happy for you! How long it takes for starting to fruit?

@Luisport … not sure about that… most of my rootstocks are in the 5/16 thickness range… some larger… one smaller.

My smallest rootstock is 1/4 inch and has WS8-10 grafted to it and it has blossoms already.

Doubt i shoud let them fruit this first season… they need to grow tops and more roots. Since they already have established root systems… perhaps some of them may grow enough this season… that i could let them fruit some next season.

We will see.
