2024/25 Winter Garden

Just bought my seeds for this cool weather season. Beds have been weeded. Need to amend the soil. Mixed greens and Brussel sprouts in addition to these.

Daikons! Our farm neighbors look at me crazy when I dig them up after the goats/cows eat the plantings they put out. Sweet and peppery. Yummie! Love them in stews.

There are so many interesting vegetables out there to grow.

I just planted some carrots (danvers 126), two types of fava beans (Aprovecho Select & Sweet Lorane), and seven types of garlic (Donostia, Hadrut, Music, Persephone White, Shvelisi, St. Helen’s, Yuggoth). I think that’s it for me as far as winter garden stuff goes this year, other than the things that just self-seed.

I planted a mix of greens; bok choi, choy sum, florida broadleaf mustard, and purple mizuna. I also planted some flowering herbs so that we can feed our winter pollinators. Next week, the arugula, fingerling carrots, swiss chard, khlorobi, radishes and turnips get planted. Brocolli and cauliflower get started indoors and then planted out when the weather actually gets cooler. And the tomato and peppers stay where they are until they die or I replace them in spring.

I do need to hack back my perennial arugula, it’s all going to seed. But I just basically mow it every fall and it regrows again. I haven’t had to replant in 3 years now! We eat so much of it, including the flowers, which have a hint of sweetness from the nectar.
