2024 Spring Grafting Thread

That’s interesting! The t-bud on the peach is the only one I’ve actually had succeed. I tried some on mulberries at the same time last fall. They failed. I’ll have to try again. What season do you bud mulberries in?

Us rubber elect tape. Not vynal, You can split it long ways to have smaller pieces for delicate worl

Since the graft has taken, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you give that scion a good soak and a bleach bath, then triple bag it, it will likely still be good next year. Wouldn’t try that with peach or plum scion, but I’ve had great takes with persimmon scion over 12 months old.

I got some mulberry scionwood of Kip Parker and Lawson Dawson recently… bought 4 russian mulberry rootstocks from BRN… got those potted up and growing (shoots and small leaves).

Grafted (whip/tounge) KP and LD to them… just a few days ago.

So far Lawson Dawson is winning the big fat bud contest… should be breaking out of that parafilm soon.

I did a few in late spring and early summer last year. I took some photos of one of the summer ones here:

I should add, that one succeeded and grew well last summer, but this spring when it started budding out, the slugs found it and devoured every bud site as soon as it started to swell, and they kept doing that over and over and it appears to have given up trying to grow. Slugs are ruthless when it comes to pawpaws and mulberries trying to bud out in spring.

Inspired by the electrical tape discussion in this thread, I gave it a try on a loquat bark graft I did yesterday, this is Peluche on a 4th year seedling of the Seattle/Chinatown tree:

Even though the bark easily slipped off the wood, it was brittle and split badly, so I did a cleft graft on an upper branch of the neighboring trunk as well, since I feel most comfortable with cleft grafts still:

"Ghidorah Graft”, aka the 3 headed dragon graft might be a success :). I see a bud coming out.
Will keep yall updated in couple months if it stays in good condition.

I noticed the same thing with my Lawson Dawson grafts, HUGE buds breaking open!

Chip bud graft at end of summer last year. I’m sold on it being a good as any other graft methods. On established apricot tree.

Overnight… Lawson Dawson continues to move fast on coming out.

Much more green showing now… 3 buds thru parafilm.

The top bud on both of my Kip Parker grafts are showing green but have not pushed thru yet…

This is the ancient apple tree i found with a different color wood. No good scionwood available. Used what I could. Finally after weeks holding my breath, buds have broken.

My coffee cake persimmon graft is pushing a lot of growth, if it wasn’t for the damn ants farming on them. knock on wood the only problematic pest pressure I have ever had other than squash borers are ants farming on my persimmon trees. They do it to all 3 of them. If I see a tree really suffering from it I’ll likely spring to action, but for the time being it just looks bad so I spray them off with the hose every couple days

Seems like 3 out of 4 my early persimmon grafts (Dar Sofiyivky) showing some promising growth.
Rootstock was planted mid March, leafed out end of April and grafted on May 6th.

Izu grafted on Burnt Ridge rootstock finally waking up. I was impressed with the size of these seedlings, but they took a long time to start waking up. Grafts were done about 3 weeks ago at the first hint of budbreak.
