2024: the journey has begun

I’m starting off a new topic for how my orchard (and I) are faring this year.
I’m currently winding down my day at the grower’s convention. Lots of good stuff here, lots of continuing research and meeting up with people I’ve known for decades at this point…and some new people I’ve met along the way.

I stopped by an orchard I used to work at on my way back to the office after a site visit (don’t tell my employer).
Those peach trees are 25 years old and still going strong.

These came yesterday.
75 brand new trees, 22 replants and 15 were requested by others.
The new trees are 25 Earlystar, 25 Glenglo and 25 Flamin Fury Lucky 13.
The replants are varied.
I’m just happy it’s taken me 11 years to fill 4 1/2 acres (I had issues with deer damage and had to wait to build a fence and then had to wait to get enough money together to start replanting) but the long, slow process of putting the first foot forward to starting an orchard has begun.

I was at my orchard yesterday.
My Rich Mays are already flowering, my redhavens are starting to flower and my cresthavens are just kinda sitting there waiting to perk up

I spent a week at my orchard .
25 Glenglo peaches were planted.
25 Earlystar peaches were planted.
25 lucky 13 trees were planted.
Around 50 trees of assorted varieties were replanted.
Oh, and the flowering of the peach trees continues.

The flowers have been pollinated, the fruit has formed and begun growing and the varmint have been digging around my trees.

I was at my orchard this weekend, and I have good news:
The fruit managed to stay on my trees this year!
And the trees, at least some of them, are kicking it into high gear with growth! I’ve mentioned before how nutrient availability and soil fertility have been an issue with me… that’s being slow fixed… unfortunately lime takes a while to do its thing.

I know the fruit’s ugly (and s little green) but it’s better than what I got last year (nothing) and the trees are growing and getting big

looking good! Our 3 Red Havens are just now done for the year. Bumper crop that sized larger than I have ever seen. I estimate 500 peaches per tree. We took 20 boxes to the local food pantries.

Next year you should see a large harvest

Thank you Paddy!
I hope so.
It’s been challenging but despite that some of the trees are chugging along

I’m making this a quick post.
My peach season was actually over last weekend with the picking of 65 pounds or so if Cresthavens that came out much better than expected.
Despite being a wet spring the bacterial spot was much lower than expected, the fruit was good quality with very little cracking compared to what I was expecting from having a dry early to mid season and then getting the rain faucet turned on again and despite the overall average size being smaller than my average redhaven tree size the yield on my Cresthavens was 4 times higher than the Redhavens.
Oh, and did I mention the Redhavens tasted awesome?
