The ongoing saga of the prune on nanking cherry

I’ve posted a few times about my experiment of some years wherein I grafted a prune plum to nanking cherry rootstock. It took off and grew, but took seven years to bloom, and now, in its eighth year had only a few blossoms. The blossoms didn’t impress me and I didn’t expect any fruitset. But I was wrong- there’s two on it now. The root sucker that I planted from the same clone at the same time is behaving about the same- it’s got one plum hanging. So for now it’s working. Been promising Bill (Auburn) I would post a grown-up picture of this experiment (The ongoing saga of the prune on nanking cherry) and here’s a couple. The first should be a baby picture and the second and thirdshould be nine years later. To date we have enjoyed two plums from this tree! [image][image][image] Our snow is finally receding- the last two pictures were just shot.

Should add that since then I’ve also grafted apricot to the plum that’s grafted to the Nanking cherry, and it is trying to bloom now.

So it looks like the original graft to tomentosa was in 2008 or thereabouts, and the apricot on top of that was 2023.
