2025 Grafting thread

I did 2 grafts last year of saijo onto my 7 years old fuyu on 3/14 and it budded out on 4/27. Both are still alive but aren’t as vigorous as I like. I also did 3 grafts onto DV seedlings rootstocks about the same time and all also survived, those grew much better over the summer. I think as long as the buds are starting to swell on the hosts it means nutrients are being pushed up.

hard to tell but are a lot of your scion larger than the rootstock? basically this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjTSi-6l2hQ&t=77s

Yes, all my scions are larger than rootstock.

I have been working on new home… land clearing project… about done with that.

Got a few grafts done the last couple days.

Plums, Goumi and Pears…

3 Raintree select goumi grafts to my red gem and sweet scarlet.

3 grafts of AU Cherry plum to my Shiro and AU Rosa trees.

2 grafts of Warren and 2 grafts of Karls Favorite to my Kiefer pear tree.

Sliced my finger while grafting in a way I never considered ever happening before.

Right on the thumb on the hand that was holding the knife when slicing up on the first cuts making the rough edge on the rootstock, cut it right on the corner of this stick.

Bled like I popped a small water balloon.

I always grafted persimmons (always haha I did this twice is more accurate) similar time as everything else before I knew that rule. So far every graft has taken, so this year I did more the same. If it isn’t broken don’t fix it, so I grafted tam kam to my Hanafuyu last week as my buds had begun to swell. I’d imagine another couple weeks and you’ll be safe as well.

I think someone was successful grafting plums to Nanking cherries since they’re genetically similar and considered somewhat dwarfing. I decided to graft a couple of Santa Rosa scions onto my Nanking a few weeks ago. If this works out well, Nanking cuttings root real easily and can be a plentiful source of rootstocks.

I have had success with grafting plums on nanking cherry, I had a 12.5% (1/8) success rate, BUT:

  • were my first 8 grafts ever
  • did it waaaay too early (used the ear of the squirrel gauge instead of temperature, did them in feb in zone6…)
  • didn’t use sealant on the top of the cutting
  • only used electrical tape, no parafilm/buddy tape/…

So, very forgiving.

How long ago was this? and did you ever get any fruits from the grafted plum scion?

last year’s grafts on the plums. both cleft, both took but boy are they ugly!

2 or 3 year old looked similar to start with but now it’s looking better:

still ugly but at least it looks load-bearing.

I’ll be getting out there to start mid April. I’ve got to be away for the first week of April and will do it when I get back. I’ve got apple cherry and plum to do this year.

It was 2 years ago. Since I am in zone 6, I just have plum trees to enjoy the flowers before a late frost takes them.

Picture of the grafted plum today:

Previous years results.

I added grafts of Chestnut crab, Red royal LT, Myers royal LT and Black LT to my pink flowering crab apple.

Chestnut is the first to bloom.

Curious about what most of you do here…

Would you plant these OHxF87 rootstocks at the rootflare or at the area where the coloration changes from green to reddish?

I put all the red in ground.

Did 56 grafts this year so far, and plan on a lot more. Probably isn’t that many for most experienced grafters, but a new record for me. Haven’t gotten much faster in my speed, but definitely making close to perfect cuts (in my opinion) now versus the first grafts I’ve done.

I grafted only 1 today, a Bell pear on the rootstock in the above pic, and managed to cut myself twice.

Neither were on the grafting. Cut my hand on a staple opening the bag from Cummins and then sliced my finger on my pruners while trying to sanitize them at the end.

For the pear rootstocks it looks to me like they rooted cuttings. Is that what they do?

Yeah I think they do rooted cuttings or tissue culture for OHxF and that they don’t root easily.
