4X4 ft Growing height/distance for Vineyard Design and Layout

I researched that a common row spacing grapes/muscadine should be spaced 8 ft between rows but the general rule of thumb is to maintain a height & row spacing ratio of 1 to 1.

But If I have the grapes at 4 feet in height and spaced 4 feet between each row, would this be sufficient for sunlight coverage for optimal growth in a high density home backyard growing style?

My opinion is that the 4x4 spacing might take care of the sunlight unless they grow together preventing light from passing through. I see problems with the fruit being so low that they would be more vulnerable to pests and they would be at a height I wouldn’t want to pick. Most muscadine vineyards are typically on a single wire about 5-6’ high. They are vigorous growers. I wouldn’t go any closer with rows than 8’. This works well for me.

Welcome to posting on growing fruit forum. It is the best.

besides light interception, you also have the shoot length before you tip them.

Keeping the vines under 4 feet in height is gonna be tough.
If you want a high density planting, I’d sooner go 6-7 feet spacing and height.

You might want to consider how good the sunlight actually is on your planting site. If you have full sun all day like a commercial vineyard you will be more likely to succeed with a higher density planting. Many backyards have some shade at least in certain parts of the day. More shade=more need for wider spacings.
