A Berries overview

Frequently we see detailed posts about berries of all types. I ran across this post on facebook and liked the simplicity of it. I also noticed it is missing 90% of the berries out there and thought we could do better. I’m still impressed with how they did this. It is concise and professional. @Drew51 @krismoriah and other berry experts we have could add a lot more types of berries on here. Where are the usual types eg. Blueberries, raspberries, huckleberries etc. ? Note below the content is not mine its a direct quote of the original post with the credits attached.

That is because this is from Australia…where Waldo, Silvan and Young and most of the others are popular… but here in America we have passed all of them by.

This picture has been passed around all of the social media platforms X, Reddit, FB etc etc etc. with people just looking for likes… for years.

The berry threads on this forum only really pick up interest when talking about Ponca or Prime Ark Freedom or Joan J etc. Pretty much the same on social medias.

Its a strange phenomenon… i guess like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith Apples. Bartlett Pears…etc.

People like to grow what they know and dont stray too far from that.

Even new berry cultivars being released are untalked about… and basically nobody is growing them either.

The Fig and Mulberry and Persimmon guys are the opposite… they will grow anything new and talk about them ad nauseum… make videos and get all excited… even turn people into Drs.

The concept is fine, a tabular photo array showing basic and varietal berry types.

Too basic for the Growing Fruit Forum discussions.

None of the berries pictured are commonly found in a National Park.

The text is over-simplified, showing various hybrids as “Rubus ursinus”, a native dewberry (not pictured)(but one that could be found in a National Park).

Silvanberry is not (Also known as wild blackberries). It was bred in the 60s in Australia.

Mine have finally established… for some reason they took a year longer than any other thing i have grown.

These are from my friend that i got them from… very hard to find pics of them in the US.

Further to note that the berry list is likely small due to the picture is from Australia…where they mostly have to grow low chill and high heat loving things…

Otherwise there would be yellow and purple rasps along with black rasps. Not to forget bluebs and honeyberries. And a much better representation of red rasps.

Here is a somewhat updated picture of what @clarkinks found. (also from Australia).

Chester isnt really worth growing either… and the pic of Lawton is a poor one… Lawton is much larger… definately not worth growing in my climate.

Most if not all other continents grow things we are no longer interested in, or did poorly here. Alot of the world grow our rejects.

I am narrowing down things i grow based on taste for me… there are alot of things really not worth growing… but still hyped by nurseries.

I grow things for enjoyment and taste for the most part… if i grew for health i reckon i would grow Aronia… but i do not like them at all really. I have a few plants for the birds if they want them.

The more purple the berry is…the better it seems to be for you. (Aronia, Elder, Blueberries, Black Currant…then finally blackberry). So i reckon i will just have to eat more blackberries :sunglasses:
