A good year for me growing Asian pears

I picked off a lot of damaged fruit from CAR and broke off some small limbs of fireblight. The remaining fruit was thinned about right for good size pears. Korean Giant to me is a very good tasting pear and is worth pampering. Picked a few this morning and as you already know, some are softball size.

KG ripens early at my southern location as well as Dripping Honey.

Oct/Nov sounds about right for other locations.

Chojuro pears golden yellow and ready for the picking but Korean giant not quite ready. Took off only the ones that released easily, but there are a lot more

Asian pears bearing well for me this year.

Chojuro looks like they would be delicious. How do you like them?

My family encouraged me to only grow Dripping Honey and Korean Giant. I have already added more limbs but I’m a little nervous about putting all my eggs into one basket.

I think they have a butterscotch taste. Very good and my first Asian pears to ripen.

Chojuro of that color are excellent! My daughter’s favorite. I have 5 trees on their way, 2nd year here and hope to fruit them next year. Kosui, hosui, chojuro are excellent and in same league, if you can keep the blight trimmed away.

My 2 year old Chojuro Asian pear died for some unknown reason. I was debating on buying another one.

Chojuro is one of my favorites as well. It’s an old variety, but it’s hard to beat that dripping butterscotch flavor.

Here is a good/bad thread for reviews of Asian pears…

Taste is subjective and each year is obviously different.

Nice looking pears. I planted a Hosui this year and have already been eating tasty pears. So happy I planted that tree I love it.

I think they have a butterscotch taste when fully ripe. It’s also really easy to tell they are ripe because of their significant change in color from brown to a bright golden color.

I struggle with other Asian pears that don’t change much at all. One day they won’t lift off and the next they are on the ground consumed by bees.
