A zone pusher’s reality check: are my persimmons doomed?

Hello everyone:

4b (Canada), 3b (USA). This Meader persimmon is doing really fine considering my zone. A lot (about 75) of beautiful orange fruits but frost is looming for 2 consecutive nights and the forecast for the next couple of days are 6 to 8 Celsius maximum. Should I harvest everything and wait for possible ripening in the house? Or leave them in the tree and hope for the best? Right now they are hard as rock even though they look like the are ripening. Help!

They should be fine. You could leave them on the tree if it looks like you’re going to get a warm spell again afterwards. It looks like according to your weather you’re not supposed to get to much below zero? As long as you aren’t supposed to get to -4 or colder. They will pass through a frost just fine. The leaves may or may not depending on how long the frost is on them. I have ripened Meader fruit that was still somewhat hard, but completely orange inside on the table. It seems like as long as the fruit has completely turned color, they can be ripened indoors at your leisure. I would give it as long on the tree as you can, then counter ripen them and you should have no problems. Congratulations on growing such a beautiful looking tree that far north and in the continent. That is inspiring.

Hi Eli,

With three concussions - push bike - my memory is not what it used to be… Did I contact you about pawpaw seeds? Thanks! Marc

No worries. We did make contact. You are further ahead it looks like with your trees, mine haven’t ever bloomed yet. But if I ever get fruit that works I will be willing to share seeds. I’m trialing a mix of some grafted varieties and seedlings.

There are some wild americans here that will hold persimmons into December… but here they normally only get a few light to moderate frosts up to that point.

The latest ones I found… were somewhat dried and had a thick brown sugar looking pulp. Delicious.

I have seen orange and hard fruit ripen and be fine… may take a couple weeks on the counter.

Perhaps… you should pick the ripest looking fruit… and leave the rest on the tree.

Good Luck

Hi Sir; I will try to keep some on the tree and pick the rest. Maybe 50/50 I like bonbons! (Goodies)
