I like alliums as flowering spring bulbs. They come in many shapes and sizes. Colors are mostly, various shades of purple, pink and white.
My favorite is an allium called Globe Master. It is about 3 ft tall and has a huge purple globe on top. It is a show stopper. I have so many people asking me what they are.
I just discovered the beauty of alliums recently. They flowered early and come back every year, very low maintenance. I also like its unique looking.
Here is the allium picture I recently took
They start blooming last week. The bloom last about 3-4 weeks. However, the globe shape flowers look good even after the purplr flowers dry out.
For the Globe Master variety, they are tall so put them in the back. You also need to hide them behind other perennials like peonies because allium leaves turn yellow soon after they flower. Their yellow dying leaves do not look attractive. Putting them behind long lasting green plants like peony solves the issue.
I see people spray paint dried Globe Master flowers for crafts/arts decorations. This variety seems to be the most expensive among alliums.
We are growing chives and just starting Chinese chives. I let some of the chives flower and find them very pretty, similar to a large clover blossom. And the bees seem to like them quite a bit.
Are they biennial? I have some allium, christophii I believe, that don’t seem to bloom reliably, maybe even biennial, but always come back. I would like a companion for it that blooms regularly! They are so pretty.
