Almonds in the SE

Has anyone tried growing almonds in the SE?

I’m thinking of specifically of the JAVIDS Iranian almond, but I’m open to other varieties too. (I’m in the central Piedmont of NC, z7.)

Can anyone advise on JAVIDS’s susceptibility to diseases such as black knot, brown rot, and peach leaf curl?

Thanks.

Jonathan

I’ve ordered seeds and will be attempting to grow them without spraying in central Alabama Z7B

I’ve got several of the Ukrainian varieties. They bloom later than other almonds, but suffer all the same east coast peach issues. You will need to spray for brown rot and plc. Almonds bloom super early, so I would advise sticking to the late blooming varieties. Javids is one I want to try, but have yet to get my hands on it.

@Robert, @SpringForthFarmNC I can’t advise on Javid’s because I’m not growing it yet, but I do have lots of extra Javid’s seeds from Cliff England which I’m happy to send you in exchange for shipping cost or as a trade.

Thanks for the offer, but I have a bunch of peach seedlings that I intend on grafting to. I can get quicker fruiting with that route. If I were you I’d try to sprout as many of those as you can. Not all of them will sprout and not all of the ones that do will make it.

Yeah, I plan to sprout them and see if any can handle our humidity.

I’m on the east coast just like you. The trees will do fine for you. It’s the brown rot that you will have to worry about.

Thanks for the tip!

Thank you everyone. Since it seems that they aren’t worse than peaches, etc, I’ll give them a try.

If I only have room for 1-2 trees, would you most recommend the JAVIDS or another variety? I see many people growing other cold-hardy varieties. Besides disease resistance, I particularly care about how easy it is to crack the nuts.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Late blooming varieties are pretty limited. Englands ( the originator of Javids) no longer sells trees (by mail) and the one or two others selling Javids are always out of stock, so you may have difficulty finding it. The Ukrainian varieties come in semi hard and soft shell. If there are any other cold hardy, late blooming varieties I am unaware of them.
