Amarena di Pescara tart cherry experiences?

Can anyone comment on their experience growing Amarena di Pescara cherry? I bought one from One Green World a couple years ago. It is beautiful, and has a reasonably compact late April bloom. It has a reputation for high flavor. Pescara is a coastal region in Italy with winter temperatures averaging from the mid 30s to the mid 50s.

I also bought one a couple years ago, and am hoping for fruit this year. It bloomed last year, but did not set fruit; I am hoping it will do so this year. Mine has been potted since purchase. I was thinking of buying a second one to put in ground, but before I could decide OGW was sold out. It has been a healthy tree so far.

Even though tart cherries are widely described as self-fertile, a lot of them are more specifically partially self-fertile. They produce better with a pollinizer.

I never finger pollinate just to get fruit, but sometimes I do that to troubleshoot why something is not fruiting. Good luck with yours! I am finger pollinating this year but my tree is too young to really expect much. I really am just hoping to get a couple fruit so I can taste it.

Yes, this year I have a blooming Morello nearby and I did also get out my little brush and did a couple dozen blossoms. We shall see…we have a lot of pollinators, but they seemed to favor the plum trees this year.

@JamesN how is yours looking? Got shuck split on a few so far, obviously not sure it will hold them at this early stage.

I got a few of those. They will often drop, especially when the tree is young. Another week or two and I will know if they form real fruit.

This was three years ago. I am curious if someone has harvested some Amarena cherries by now. I am very interested in buying or grafting one. :slightly_smiling_face:

Mine has never held fruit in the 3 years it’s been blooming. I don’t have another sour cherry though, so it might just be a pollination issue.

I ended up tossing mine as it came down with some disease during a period where I couldn’t devote the energy to taking care of a lot of my trees. I’m not sure if I’ll replace it.
