American/Hybrid persimmon taste test

I think that’s mostly because few people have that one yet, and it has yet to be hyped sufficiently. Cliff gives a pretty glowing description of it on his website.

I’ve had David’s Kandy (Korn) fruiting here for years. That said, persimmons taste like persimmons to me. DKK is pretty, fruits hang on the tree and have to be cut free or pulled off.
Mine is in a spot where its difficult for me to access the fruits… I’d run out of rootstocks and there was a volunteer on the pond dam, so i used it. Need to regraft scions in a more accessible location.
Heres a photo from 29 Oct 2023… I cant pick out fruits in the pic…but they’re in there; elongate ‘acorn’ shape…

Thanks for this! I just bought one recently and was wondering if that was a mistake, since not too many have commented on it. Hopefully it’s good and not underwhelming compared to the other hybrids I have.

I ordered DV rootstock and H118 (early jewel) scions, I sure hope I end up with a tree - I have never grafted before and have a heck of a time finding American persimmon trees that will ship to CA.

Persimmon aren’t the easiest to graft. Don’t get discouraged if this first attempt isn’t successful. I think your odds are much better if the rootstock is established and growing, the scion is dormant, and the temperatures are 70s or higher.

@DragonflyLane … I grew a couple persimmons from Rich Tooie seeds one season a few years back.

They grew well that first season making 42 inch and 36 inch.

In January the next year we had a warmup spell and I planted them out in my orchard.

In April they were budding heavy… then shoots and small leaves. We had a nice warm spell then…

I gradted Kasandra to the larger one and Nakitas Gift to the smaller one. Both were successful and are nice sized trees now with scaffold branches.

That worked well for me.

PS i have grafted several americans and hybrids to my own wild dv rootstocks… and the large majority I used whip/tounge grafts.
Very good success rates. 90% +

Best of luck to you.

I can’t find these nowhere, so if you are interested in selling, I’m buying improved persimmon trees and scion wood. Please, let me know (jmaiagardens@gmail.com)

As far as I know, sellers of scion wood from northern varieties (e.g., apples, pears, American persimmons) typically prune in Jan/Feb to fulfill orders that have accumulated in late autumn and winter. By now, they are long since sold out.

I follow a similar cycle, taking scions in winter for use in April/May. I finished my own grafting a few weeks ago. I had some left over H-118 sticks but mailed them to another grower last week.

I’d be happy to cut some sticks for you next winter. But you’ll have to remind me in Dec / Jan.

This is a good vendor. I’ve used them frequently.

What’s the opinion of the group of the largest most American tasting hybrid. In my opinion kaki has a very different taste from Americans. Like the difference between an apple and a pear or an apple and a quince. That caramel/”rum raisin/butterscotch flavor is what I detect in Americans. Kakis never have that. Rossyanka some years has that american flavor, Nikita’s gift never has it. Izu and Suruga never have the american flavor.
